Octavia Spencer told Jessica Chastain about women of color’s salaries, and here’s what she did
Jessica Chastain is here to prove to you that Time’s Up is more than just a pin and a website. When her Academy Award-winning costar Octavia Spencer wanted to discuss the gender wage gap in Hollywood and how severely it affects women of color, Chastain was shocked and spurred to action.
“She said, ‘You and I are gonna be tied together,'” Spencer said at a Sundance Panel. “‘We’re gonna be favored nations, and we’re gonna make the same thing, you are going to make that amount.’ Fast-forward to last week, we’re making five times what we asked for.”

In a surreal – yet too real – moment on Saturday Night Live tonight, Jessica Chastain deliberately broke character as a talk show host to lament, what even matters anymore?
Chastain ostensibly plays host Veronica Elders, quizzing contestants played by Cecily Strong, Kate McKinnon, and Kenan Thompson on whether newsworthy things President Trump has said or done recently even rate among his base or the media today.
Not surprisingly, nothing does.
Even hypothetical situations, however objectively horrible, don’t matter.
“The president fires Robert Mueller, the very man investigating him for treason. Does it even matter?” host Veronica asks. Read more…

Jessica Chastain, lamenting both her dearth of fun, flighty girl roles and her absence from this weekend’s Women’s Marches, gave a singing, dancing monologue to kick off tonight’s Saturday Night Live hosting duties – all to the tune of Lesley Gore’s female empowerment anthem, “You Don’t Own Me.”
Flanked by SNL mainstays Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong, Chastain belted out the classic, while Aidy Bryant celebrated with pink “P-Hats.”
“I can’t say the real word ‘cos it’s just one of those many words that only the president can use,” Bryant clarified.

The Los Angeles Times‘ magazine Envelope got into a bit of trouble with the internet and film fans last week.
Actresses Jessica Chastain, Annette Bening, Margot Robbie, Diane Kruger, Saoirse Ronan, and Kate Winslet donned the cover of the issue, which was exploring ‘a shift in focus’ on how stories are being told in film—but the image and subsequent conversation included no women of color.
The publication was called out for its lack of inclusion, and the ever outspoken Chastain responded to disheartened readers with a question and her own thoughts on the problem.

Hollywood audition culture is notoriously sexist — celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence and Emmy Rossum have spoken out about it before. And in a new sketch from Friday’s Tonight Show, Jessica Chastain took another dig at the famously toxic process.
In the sketch, Chastain shows up at an audition to read for “Angela.” The part seems straightforward enough, until the casting director (played by Jimmy Fallon) starts asking her to “do it again, but hot” and, in a truly cringeworthy moment, to read her lines like a “spicy little peppermint with a secret.” (Of course, when a male actor comes in to audition, he receives no notes.) As the past several weeks have revealed, sexual misconduct has been far too prevalent in Hollywood, but the entertainment industry is now cleaning house. The #MeToo movement and public accusal of powerful men in Hollywood is a movement that requires many, but big name actresses like Angelina Jolie and Reese Witherspoon helped spread the word significantly.
For their annual roundtable, The Hollywood Reporter gathered together six top actresses with major releases this season to talk about their work – and, naturally, the conversation quickly shifted to the ongoing sexual harassment issue in Hollywood. Read more…
