Netflix cancels ‘Jessica Jones’ and ‘The Punisher’

TwitterFacebook

Marvel’s The Punisher and Jessica Jones are getting axed.

Don’t freak out, Jessica Jones fans — the third season of the show will still be streamed. But the relationship between Netflix and Marvel looks like it’s over. The two struck a deal in 2013 that involved four series based on Marvel characters, as well as The Defenders

Confirming that The Punisher “will not return for a third season,” Netflix nodded to showrunner Steve Lightfoot and the crew in a statement to Deadline. “We are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come.”  Read more…

Netflix cancels ‘Jessica Jones’ and ‘The Punisher,’ its last Marvel shows

Netflix is no longer in the Marvel superhero business, with the cancellation of “Jessica Jones” and “The Punisher.” The writing has been on the wall since last fall, when the streaming service canceled its other three Marvel shows — “Iron Fist,” “Luke Cage” and “Daredevil.” Plus, showrunner Melissa Rosenberg was already announced to leave “Jessica Jones” […]

Original Content podcast: We take a drink with season two of ‘Jessica Jones’

Netflix recently released the second season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones, which finds the titular private detective dealing with unwanted fame and investigating the mysterious organization that gave her superpowers. Despite successfully confronting her nemesis Kilgrave at the end of season one, Jessica (played by Krysten Ritter) remains as prickly as ever — and just as […]

Spoilers for Season 2 of Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones has been through a lot. She had been when we met her – two and a half years and three seasons ago, before breaking Kilgrave’s neck or joining the rest of her local heroes to face off with the Hand in The Defenders.

After the events of Season 2, our battered hero is more bruised than ever, and it’s hard to imagine those battle scars ever fading.

If Jessica Jones Season 1 was about exiling the past, then Season 2 is about protecting the future (albeit often by way of exiling the past). Jessica sees the future she could have with her mother Alisa, a super-powered and super-temperamental addition to her life courtesy of IGH. She forms an attachment despite herself; this isn’t a stranger, after all, but the mother she knows and remembers from childhood – or at least some of her. Read more…

Let’s talk about that new ‘Jessica Jones’ character

TwitterFacebook

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Jessica Jones Season 2.

Marvel’s Jessica Jones has been a revelation for women ever since it premiered in 2015. Not only did it present us with a deeply flawed and traumatized protagonist, it dealt with her history and insecurities head-on.

In Season 2, we still have a host of varied, complicated women; from Carrie Ann Moss’s struggling Jeri Hogarth to Rachael Taylor’s unraveling Trish to our newest character, played by Janet McTeer. It’s a pivotal role with DEEP complexity and physicality, the likes of which is rare for women in action shows – especially women of a certain age. Read more…

‘Jessica Jones’ Season 2 is a bit of an uphill climb

TwitterFacebook

Marvel’s Jessica Jones Season 1 is one hell of an act to follow. It opened on an abrasive alcoholic and her deeply ingrained trauma, on a double homicide of parents by their daughter, and Marvel’s most fearsome small screen villain, if not an all-time contender.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that Jessica Jones Season 2 feels immensely slow by comparison.

Don’t get us wrong, Season 2 isn’t bad – at least, not in the first five episodes screened for critics – but it drags from the get-go and it’s hard to ignore. Jessica has all-but dissociated from everything with Kilgrave, and she’s essentially in denial of her newfound fame and duty since The Defenders (let alone all those supernatural shenanigans). She’s recognizable on the street and the phrase “superhero vigilante” is bandied about like this is Daredevil Season 1 establishing Hell’s Kitchen. Read more…

What’s coming to Netflix in March

TwitterFacebook

Network TV is back with a vengeance post-Olympics, but so is streaming as Netflix gears up for another packed year. Here’s what’s coming to Netflix in March.

Top pick: Marvel’s Jessica Jones Season 2

Your favorite self-loathing and super-strong P.I. is back and once again battling demons from her past. We don’t mean Kilgrave – though he may come up – but the mysterious organization I.G.H. and its connection to Jessica’s missing time and supernatural abilities.  Read more…
