John Oliver asks Monica Lewinsky about her experience of public shaming

TwitterFacebook

Is it ever okay for someone to be publicly shamed?

That’s the tricky question tackled by John Oliver on Sunday’s edition to Last Week Tonight. As part of the deep dive, Oliver goes through some recent examples of times a single person has faced widespread wrath — from the woman wrongfully accused of being the “worst aunt ever” to the actors embroiled in the recent college admissions scandal.

To finish, Oliver interviews Monica Lewinsky — a woman he describes as someone who “might actually be the perfect person to remind all of us what the consequences can be to a mis-directed flood of public anger.” Read more…

John Oliver has a perfectly brutal solution to the growing problem of robocalls

TwitterFacebook

Ever picked up your phone to find yourself speaking with a robot?

You’re very much not alone. Everyone’s least favourite form of communication increased by 60 percent last year, per CNBC, and the fact hasn’t gone unnoticed by John Oliver.

In his latest monologue for Last Week Tonight Oliver is on his usual top, angry form — casually slamming mailboxes and AT&T before setting his sights firmly on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), who he clearly doesn’t think are doing enough to stop call-happy robots.

His solution? A message delivered right to the heart of the FCC itself — via robocall. Read more…

John Oliver has some stark thoughts about the 2020 elections

TwitterFacebook

Are the 2020 elections worth going into in any great detail at the moment?

John Oliver isn’t so sure.

“The bar’s pretty low now,” the comedian and Last Week Tonight host told Seth Meyers. “Whenever anyone announces for president now you just go, ‘Sure, fine — yeah, added to the list, you’re fine. Kamala Harris, great. Bernie Sanders, great. A tortoise, walking across an abandoned Wendy’s parking lot? Has he got an exploratory committee? You would work as well.'”

Oliver thinks that right now, there isn’t much to see when it comes to new candidates putting themselves forward.

“It’s dangerous I think giving it too much attention right now when there’s plenty of other **** we should be looking at,” he said. Read more…

John Oliver shares his thoughts on Brexit and we honestly don’t know whether to laugh or cry

Deal or no deal, Brexit is happening on March 29. And while the idea of a no-deal Brexit has always been slightly terrifying, it was just made all the more so by British comedian John Oliver.

John Oliver screaming Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Since U Been Gone’ is all of us

Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” is too high-pitched for mere mortals like ourselves, Shaq, John Oliver, Rachel Brosnahan, Anthony Anderson, and even Mumford and Sons.
That didn’t stop Jimmy Fallon from challenging a bunch of celebrities and …

John Oliver’s latest deep dive takes a look at 1 very troubling global trend

TwitterFacebook

If you thought John Oliver was going to pick a lighter topic to round off his most recent series, you’d be wrong.

Yep: the latest issue up for discussion is the fairly unnerving global trend of countries electing authoritarian leaders to power — from Vladimir Putin’s ongoing reign in Russia to Brazil’s recent appointment of the far-right politician Jair Bolsonaro.

In the clip above, Oliver breaks down exactly what makes an “authoritarian” leader — from projecting strength and demonising enemies to the dismantling of institutions.

And guess who it all comes back to in the end? Yep, Trump.

“The world is dabbling with something very dangerous right now, and America needs to be careful,” concludes Oliver. “And look, I know democracy can be, often by design, frustrating. Checks and balances can be irritating and slow, and might not deliver the outcome you wanted.  Read more…

Net neutrality activists, not hackers, crashed the FCC’s comment system

An unprecedented flood of citizens concerned about net neutrality is what took down the FCC’s comment system last May, not a coordinated attack, a report from the agency’s Office of the Inspector General concluded. The report unambiguously describes the “voluminous viral traffic” resulting from John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight piece on the topic as the cause of the system’s collapse.

FCC claims of DDoS net neutrality attack were ‘bogus’

TwitterFacebook

Pretty much everyone saw this coming.

A forthcoming report from the FCC’s Office of Inspector General reportedly dispels earlier dubious claims from the FCC that its comment system was hit by a distributed denial of service attack in May of last year. It turns out, after all, that the commission’s site was likely brought to a crawl not by malicious hackers or pranksters but by — gasp — concerned citizens trying to make their voices heard in support of net neutrality

“The Inspector General Report tells us what we knew all along: the FCC’s claim that it was the victim of a DDoS attack during the net neutrality proceeding is bogus,” reads a statement from FCC commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel. “What happened instead is obvious—millions of Americans overwhelmed our online system because they wanted to tell us how important internet openness is to them and how distressed they were to see the FCC roll back their rights.” Read more…
