Jupiter raises $23 million to tell businesses and governments how climate change will destroy them

Whether it’s by flood, fire, or the fury of a storm, climate-related catastrophes are now impacting most cities and towns across the country. As these natural disasters increase in frequency and severity, cities and the businesses that reside in them are mobilizing to understand how best to prepare for the climatological challenges they’re going to […]

Newly-discovered world on the edge of the solar system could lead us to Planet X

TwitterFacebook

A newfound object nicknamed “The Goblin” lurking in the far reaches of our solar system could be yet another clue that points us toward the discovery of the theoretical Planet X, or Planet 9 — a large world thought to exist well beyond Pluto’s orbit.

A new study, submitted to the Astronomical Journal, details the discovery of the new object, officially named 2015 TG387, which takes about 40,000 years to make a full orbit of the sun.

The possible world joins the ranks of other relatively small objects in its part of space.

And lead author of the study Scott Sheppard believes there are thousands of these extremely distant objects with elongated orbits around the sun.  Read more…

Scientists discover 10 never-before-seen moons orbiting Jupiter, and one’s an oddball

TwitterFacebook

Jupiter is a huge planet with a ridiculous number of moons.

And now, thanks to new research, that number just became even more ridiculous.

Scientists have discovered 10 never-before-seen moons of Jupiter in 2017 and confirmed two others that had already been seen, bringing the total number of known moons circling the gas giant planet to 79, more than any other planet in the solar system.

How exactly did these moons evade detection for so long? Well, it’s not as if they’re large and bright like some of Jupiter’s other moons, for instance, Europa or Ganymede.  Read more…

A new study just inched us closer to understanding if Jupiter’s moon Europa could host alien life

TwitterFacebook

Europa is objectively one of the most badass moons in the solar system.

The relatively small moon of Jupiter is thought to have a liquid water ocean beneath its icy shell, and it’s considered one of the most likely places to host alien life in our solar system.

Now, thanks to a new study published in the journal Nature Astronomy this week, we may be inching closer to figuring out if Europa could host life in the ocean hidden beneath its frozen surface.

According to the new study, NASA’s Galileo spacecraft — which ended its mission by purposefully crashing into Jupiter’s atmosphere in 2003 — likely flew through a plume of water erupting from Europa in 1997. Read more…

Fly above Jupiter’s terrifying north pole in new NASA video

TwitterFacebook

Jupiter’s north pole is unsettling, at best. It’s comprised of one giant storm encircled by eight spinning cyclones — all of which have larger diameters than the moon.

Fortunately, this nightmarish place orbits as far as 600 million miles away from Earth. But for those willing, NASA scientists have made a 3D tour through the tempestuous clouds.

Unveiled Wednesday at the European Geosciences Union General Assembly in Vienna, Austria, the 1 minute and 20-second plunge through what appears to be hell’s inferno is composed of images taken by a camera aboard the Juno spacecraft, which is currently orbiting the planet.  Read more…
