Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt team up in the trailer for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino’s latest film about the industry’s “golden era.”

DiCaprio plays Rick Dalton, a TV actor trying to stay relevant, while Pitt plays his aloof stuntman Cliff. The trailer is all candy-colored ’60s nostalgia with barely a glimpse of the rest of the star-studded cast, which includes Al Pacino, Kurt Russell, Timothy Olyphant, Dakota Fanning – and the late Luke Perry. We  do see Margot Robbie as real-life actress Sharon Tate, who was murdered the year this movie takes place. Read more…

Scientists just named a newly discovered water beetle after Leonardo DiCaprio

TwitterFacebook

Leonardo DiCaprio is an Academy Award winning actor, environmental activist, and most recently, a beetle namesake.

A water beetle species discovered in Malaysia was named Grouvellinus leonardodicaprioi in honor of DiCaprio’s environmental work. The tiny black beetle — Leotle, if you will — was  found on the side of a waterfall in Malaysian Borneo. The 3mm Leotle found by scientists was in rough shape — it was missing an antennae and front leg.

The expedition, organized by Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines and Dutch organization Taxon Expeditions, is part of a program that trains every day people to capture, study, and identify new species. In a video by Taxon Expeditions, the group calls the new beetle’s discoverers “ecotourists trained by experts in rainforest biology.” Read more…

In remote, off-the-grid lands, millions of people would be pleased to plug in a small fridge, or use a blender, or even just turn on a lightbulb. But power grids still don’t reach over one billion people worldwide, so these people often still read by candlelight and use diesel generators to charge their cell phones.

One company with a new, high-profile Hollywood connection is trying to change this through distributed solar power installations.

Actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio has joined an off-the-grid solar company, Kingo, which seeks to power lights, refrigerators, and laptops for people in remote areas, like those living in the Guatemalan mountains. DiCaprio, who has invested millions in conservation and renewable energy causes, not only became an investor in Kingo — he also joined its board of advisors, the company announced Thursday. Well, we all know how that one ended — and judging by a recent photo of Hardy shared on Instagram, it seems he’s finally kept his word.
