Kim Davis, the county clerk in Kentucky who was briefly jailed for defying a court order to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, has lost her bid for re-election.

Cate Blanchett defends straight actors playing LGBTQ roles

TwitterFacebook

Hollywood has a long history of straight actors playing LGBTQ roles, and it’s something Cate Blanchett has defended.

The Australian actress played a lesbian woman in 2015 film Carol, and according to the Hollywood Reporter, she had never been asked about her sexuality until she played an LGBTQ character.

Blanchett disagrees with the notion that an actor should have lived the experience of the character they play, saying that it defies the whole point of acting.

“It also speaks to something that I’m quite passionate about in storytelling generally, but in film specifically, is that film can be quite a literal medium,” she said at the Rome Film Festival. Read more…

5 ways parents can talk to kids about LGBTQ identity

TwitterFacebook

If you’re a parent or caregiver unsure of how to start a conversation with a child about what it means to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer, consider Pride Month the perfect excuse to start an ongoing dialogue.

From rainbow Pride flags and sports jerseys, to dozens of Pride parades, to Pride-related political events, there’s a good chance your child will have questions about the monthlong celebration — and why it’s so important to talk openly about LGBTQ experiences and identity.

“They may bring it home to you as part of their discussion of the day,” says Eliza Byard, executive director of GLSEN, a nonprofit advocacy network focused on creating LGBT-inclusive schools.  Read more…

Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez won last night’s Democratic primary for Texas governor. She’ll be the first openly lesbian woman and Latina nominated by a major party to run in the state’s gubernatorial race. A few hours south, Gina Ortiz-Jones won her Democratic primary for Congress, which would make her the first Filipina-American to serve in Congress as well as the first openly lesbian woman to represent Texas should she win.

These are all historic victories on a single night, and advocates expect more to come. It’s been a record year for LGBTQ candidates seeking elected office, and some of them are even — get ready for it — winning. Read more…
