The 747 that went to Burning Man: What really happened

TwitterFacebook

Much of Burning Man‘s art projects — the good, the bad, and the ugly — have the same origin story. Invariably, one of the 70,000 attendees at the noncommercial desert festival start a conversation with the words “wouldn’t it be great if …”

The Big Imagination project began that way too — and grew into a group that raised and spent just short of $1 million to bring a Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet (or rather, 3/4 of one) to Burning Man this year. But the final execution of its plan was unprecedented in the event’s 32-year history — both in its scale, and the level of controversy it generated.

Jon Stewart and Dave Chappelle will join forces this June for a landmark comedy tour that will stop in Boston, Houston, and El Paso and yes, tickets are on sale now.

The tour will run for seven dates and marks Jon Stewart’s return to stand up after a — wait for it — twenty-two year hiatus from the format. His last high-profile stand up was Jon Stewart: Unleavened, which aired on HBO in 1996. HBO also announced in 2017 that Jon Stewart would perform two stand up specials for the platform but those have yet to materialize. He also briefly appeared with Chappelle during one of Chappelle’s stand up shows at Radio City Music Hall in August 2017. Read more…

‘Mean Girls’ on Broadway is fun and fetch

TwitterFacebook

The Plastics are ready to rule again.

As anyone with a passing knowledge of pop culture is aware, the Plastics refer to the enviable, popular ladies that make up the 2004 modern classic film about teenagers, Mean Girls. And it seems the ladies are poised to shine once more, as a musical version of the beloved film hits Broadway.

Perhaps not surprisingly, given the rabid fanbase that has spent the past 14 years quoting the film to each other, the Mean Girls musical, with a book by Tina Fey and music by Jeff Richmond, hews quite closely to its source material. Many iconic lines from the film are delivered exactly how you remember them (“Danny DeVito! I love your work!”), and are immediately greeted by enthusiastic audience cheers. Clearly, for many fans, a faithful retelling of the endlessly rewatchable film — with a couple additional dance breaks — is what they are after. Read more…
