Website secretly livestreamed 1,600 unwitting hotel guests for paying members

TwitterFacebook

No, you’re not being paranoid.

Four individuals have been arrested for a scheme allegedly involving spy cams in 42 motel rooms across South Korea and the livestreaming of up to 1,600 unwitting guests. The intended audience, however, was much larger than just those four — a website broadcast the videos to its over 4,000 members, at least some of whom paid for access.

So reports the Korean Herald, which notes that the hidden IP cameras had 1-millimeter lenses and were installed in TVs, power outlets, and other seemingly innocuous hotel room fixtures. The paper adds that, according to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s cyber investigation unit, the scheme reached 30 different motels in 10 cities across the country.  Read more…

Stadia will make YouTube livestreamers a lot more valuable

TwitterFacebook

On Tuesday, Google unveiled its new video game streaming platform, Google Stadia. The tech behemoth stepping into the fairly new cloud gaming ring is certainly a big deal, but the effects it will have on YouTube’s ecosystem may be just as big.

With the Stadia announcement, Google revealed heavy YouTube integrations with the gaming platform. Cloud gaming services existed long before Google’s gaming platform, but they didn’t have the help of a massively popular video platform — nor did they exist at a time when internet speeds could handle video game streaming.

YouTube users watching a gaming stream will be able to launch right into playing the very game they were viewing thanks to a button which will be embedded on Stadia-based livestreams. While we don’t yet know if users will have to purchase each game a la carte or subscribe to an open library with Stadia, which games get the most play will almost certainly depend on who’s streaming them. Developers already promote games via popular streamers; Stadia could carry that to the next level.  Read more…

LinkedIn Live will be rolled out via invite-only to select U.S. users for this initial beta phase. Users who want to try out LinkedIn Live but aren’t one of the lucky invitees will eventually be able to apply for access to the service.

LinkedIn tells us that they’re putting a focus on interactive and timely live video streams on LinkedIn Live. The company provided examples such AMA (Ask Me Anything) events or mentors giving their students advice. The social network is clearly looking to shape the content streamed on the service, at least at first, by using it to support users looking to broadcast conferences, company announcements, earnings calls, and other similar events. Why more politicians should livestream their own State of the Union response

TwitterFacebook

History will be made following President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday night.

Stacey Abrams will make history as the first black woman to deliver the official response to the State of the Union for either major party. The progressive Georgia Democrat, who also made history last year as the first ever gubernatorial nominee from a major party, is a great pick to deliver the response as a unifying voice among the party’s many wings and factions.

However, a bit of a controversy has been brewing online surrounding the alternative responses to the State of the Union.

Senators Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris have each announced that they will be delivering their own State of the Union responses via online platforms like Facebook and YouTube. Sanders, a rumored 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, has been criticized on social media for trying to “upstage” or “take the spotlight away from” Abrams. Harris, who has officially announced her 2020 presidential run, has also received criticism.  Read more…

Twitter’s livestreaming video app Periscope launches audio-only broadcasts

TwitterFacebook

Periscope, Twitter’s livestreaming video app, rolled out a brand new feature today that brings a new type of broadcast to the platform.

When updating Periscope to the latest version, the livestreaming video app now allows users to create audio-only broadcasts. The latest version description reads:

In a blog post, Twitter engineer Richard Plom went a bit further into how audio-only broadcasts came to be. According to Plom, Perscope users have long requested the feature and had previously created their own ad hoc workaround by covering the camera lense of the phone when broadcasting. During #HackWeek at Twitter, the development team got together and made this happen in one work week. Read more…
