Under 21 in Singapore? You can’t see ‘Love, Simon’ in cinemas

TwitterFacebook

Love, Simon won’t be seen in cinemas by anyone under 21 in Singapore.

Greg Berlanti’s delightful gay teen rom-com has been rated R21 by the country’s Info-communications Media Development Authority (IMDA), meaning unless you’re over 21, you can’t see it in a theater.

Dubbed a triumphantly relatable tale for members of the LGBTQ communities, Love, Simon follows the story of teenager Simon Spier, who comes out in high school to his family and friends.

The IMDA delivered the R21 rating with an advisory of “Homosexual Theme.” For context, there is no legal protection against LGBTQ discrimination in Singapore, in fact, it is considered against the law in the country for two men to “commit” what the Penal Code viciously calls “gross indecency” — the maximum penalty is two years in prison.  Read more…

If there’s one word to describe Becky Albertalli’s book Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (turned rom-com Love, Simon), it’s “relatable.”

The book follows Simon, a closeted high schooler who begins an online romance with another student, who goes by the anonymous name “Blue.” When Martin, Simon’s fellow student, discovers the emails, he begins blackmailing Simon. From there, Simon must figure out how to protect his identity and who Blue is — all the while trying to navigate the messy, complicated world of high school. Read more…

‘Love, Simon’ is a gotdamn delightful romcom, and it’s gay as hell

TwitterFacebook

Dear Simon,

Thank you.

That’s the first thing I wanted to say after seeing Love, Simon, 20th Century Fox’s new teen rom-com, directed by Greg Berlanti, based off of the bestselling novel Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli.

Love, Simon follows Simon Spier (Nick Robinson), a high school senior who has “a totally perfectly normal life.” He has a squad — best friends Leah (Katherine Langford), Abby (Alexandra Shipp), and Nick (Jorge Lenderborg Jr.) — and a loving family, and he drinks way too much coffee. You know. Typical high school stuff. Except Simon has “one huge-ass secret”: he’s gay. And nobody, including his friends and family, knows. Read more…
