Boeing’s ‘Wingman’ drone buddies up with pilot-flown jets

It’s already tomorrow in Australia, seemingly in more ways than one. It’s the 27th already, yes, but they’re also working in putting together AI-flown companion jets for their fighters. Why didn’t we think of that? It’s a Boeing Australia joint, but maybe they’ll contract out to the U.S. facilities and we can snake one off the line. I know a guy.

Microsoft says it has democratic responsibility to accept lucrative military contract

TwitterFacebook

Microsoft agreed to take hundreds of millions of dollars to help soldiers kill — but don’t worry, the company’s CEO says it’s for the sake of democracy.

On Monday at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Nadella told CNN Business that Microsoft would continue developing HoloLens augmented reality (AR) technology for the U.S. military, despite employee protests. He couched the decision in terms of his corporation’s duty to support the government.

“We made a principled decision that we’re not going to withhold technology from institutions that we have elected in democracies to protect the freedoms we enjoy,” Nadella told CNN Business. Read more…

The Redmond, Washington based tech giant will be providing prototypes of its augmented reality headset, HoloLens, for the Army to use in combat missions and in training.

While the U.S. Army already uses Microsoft’s HoloLens devices in training, this latest development would bring the headsets onto the battleground and into live combat. The terms of the contract could see the U.S. military deploying 100,000 of the company’s AR headsets.

The contract is part of a military program called HUD 3.0, for “heads up device.” Also known as the Integrated Visual Augmentation System, the government’s description of the program states its purpose is to “increase lethality by enhancing the ability to detect, decide and engage before the enemy.” Read more…
