Here to make you cry in public is another photo of Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers in the upcoming film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

Fans of the original series will remember this as Rogers’ classic changing into sneakers bit, a moment that accompanied Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood‘s opening theme song.

Directed by Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood tells the story of the real-life friendship between Rogers and journalist Tom Junod — played in the film by The Americans star Matthew Rhys. Read more…

Remember that time time Fox News said Mister Rogers was ‘evil’?

TwitterFacebook

“This evil, evil man has now ruined a generation of kids.”

That’s how the folks of Fox and Friends once described Mister Rogers.

In a 2007 clip from the show, the show hosts go on a tirade claiming the man behind Mister Rogers Neighborhood managed to “discount” hard work by telling children that they were special, and have therefore “ruined” kids by making them entitled. Their bold commentary has resurfaced following the critically acclaimed release of Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Considering the positive impact that Rogers had on children who grew up watching his public television show, it’s an amusing smear campaign to watch years later — and thankfully, it hasn’t hurt his legacy one bit. Read more…

Why Mister Rogers’ message of love and kindness is good for your health

TwitterFacebook

The release of the Mister Rogers documentary, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” calls to mind the essential message of Rogers’ long-running children’s program, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” Fred McFeely Rogers, who died in 2003, was also an ordained Presbyterian minister. Over the course of three decades on public broadcasting, he brought to millions of children what his faith’s General Assembly referred to as “unconditional love.”

In preaching love, Rogers wasn’t just attending to the moral character of his youthful audience. He believed that he was also promoting their health. As he said in 1979, “My whole approach in broadcasting has always been, ‘You are an important person just the way you are. You can make healthy decisions.’ Maybe I’m going on too long, but I just feel that anything that allows a person to be more active in the control of his or her life, in a healthy way, is important.” Read more…

10 things we learned from ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’ that we’ll never forget

TwitterFacebook

Television has introduced us to a series of unforgettable neighbors, from Boy Meets World‘s Mr. Feeny to Sister, Sister‘s pesky Roger.

But there is perhaps no television neighbor more iconic than Mister Rogers from PBS’ Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

The daily educational program for children debuted on PBS in 1968, after two smaller runs — in 1963 with Misterogers on the Canadian Broadcast Corporation, and in 1966 with Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood on the Eastern Educational Network. Every day the titular character, played by Fred Rogers, would get home from work, put on a cardigan and sneakers, and talk to his neighbors, delivering lessons on friendship, love, kindness, acceptance, and more. (We, the viewers, were his neighbors, too). Read more…

Five little words cemented Fred Rogers in the hearts of America and the history of television. The upcoming documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor? takes a closer look at Rogers, who died in 2003, and the indelible legacy of his show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood debuted in 1963, and as the trailer for Won’t You Be My Neighbor? notes, it went against every model for a successful TV show. Rogers provided children with compassionate messages about divorce, death, race, and more. Clips from the stirring trailer show Rogers talking earnestly about love with a sincerity that sometimes seems light years from 2018. Read more…
