MoviePass has had quite a year, but looks to be trying to return to its previous glory with new 2019 plans. Starting in the new year, MoviePass subscribers will have access to all showtimes of all movies for either a monthly rate (pricing based on lo…

MoviePass, what are you doing??
It isn’t easy being MoviePass right now.
Over the past few months, the subscription-based movie ticket service has lost millions of dollars, run out of money, limited its titles, and changed its pricing models more times than we could count. It’s lost customers (some of whom found it exceedingly difficult to get out) and been hit with an investigation by the New York Attorney General.
Somehow, they’ve survived — but their reputation has taken a serious hit in the process. Naturally, then, they’re eager to get back into the good graces of their understandably disgruntled customers. Read more…

Helios and Matheson Analytics (HMNY) will spin off MoviePass and all movie-related activities into a separate public company. HMNY is an analytics company after all, and MoviePass has been a pretty bad investment for the company’s bottom line. When HMNY acquired MoviePass last year, the company didn’t really care about creating a subscription service for […]

As the summer of MoviePass quickly turned into the bummer of MoviePass, the company has been trying all manner of Hail Maries to keep the dream alive. And while the movie ticket startup has been burning through cash like crazy, securing funding apparently hasn’t been an issue. This week, MoviePass’ parent company Helios & Matheson […]

As MoviePass fights to hang on after the business reality of not being profitable came crashing down over the summer, a new tactic has emerged: Force lapsed users to resubscribe without their knowledge.

AMC’s MoviePass competitor hits 380K users in 3 months, will increase US attendance
As MoviePass flounders and runs out of cash, AMC’s competitive offering, AMC Stubs A-List, is scaling up quickly. The theater chain announced this morning the service is growing faster than anticipated, and has already signed up over 380,000 users in the three months since its late July launch. The growth is notable also because much […]

It’s been a rough few months for MoviePass. But every time the movie subscription service has faltered, one company has been there to pick up the pieces. Sinemia has done a solid job benefiting from MoviePass’s woes, even seeming to taunt its chief competitor with a handful of promotions. Now that Sinemia is launching an […]

“It’s not you. It’s me… and my plummeting stock valuation.”
In a surprise to absolutely no one, MoviePass has yet another change in store for many of its users. As of today, annual subscribers are getting booted from their unlimited plans and downgraded to three movies per month.
The new annual plan was announced via email. A number of users posted screenshots of it to Twitter.

One gets the distinct impression that nothing is ever permanent with MoviePass — including, of course, MoviePass itself. The troubled film subscription service has been through a number of different rule changes in recent months, as it’s worked to stem the financial bleeding. In an email, CEO Mitch Lowe outlined the latest updates to the […]

MoviePass has made yet another update in the ongoing turbulent saga of its existence: From now on – or maybe until tomorrow, who knows! – subscribers will be able to purchase tickets only to six possible movies, which change on a daily basis. Not only does this restrict users to half a dozen titles, but MoviePass will also limit available showtimes (except for e-ticketing).
While there is a touch of excitement to this plan and to the rotation of movies, it’s of no use to users who like to plan their movie-viewing at least 24 hours in advance. Want to see Crazy Rich Asians? Cool, not yet though! Want to see BlacKkKlansman? Neat, but go today before it’s gone! Read more…

The company that owns MoviePass lost a ton of money last quarter. Unsurprising, I realize, but in context, it’s actually a bit of a mind boggling. The more austerely named Helios and Matheson Analytics had one heck of a tough quarter, posting a $126.6 million operating loss, as compared to a loss of $2.7 million […]
