With cybersecurity threats looming, the government shutdown is putting America at risk

Putting political divisions and affiliations aside, the government partially shutting down for the third time over the last year is extremely worrisome, particularly when considering its impact on the nation’s cybersecurity priorities. After iPhone spying report, China suggests Trump switch to a Huawei phone

China’s got jokes.

The New York Times reported on Wednesday that President Trump insists on sometimes using an unsecured iPhone, according to multiple Trump aides. Since the phone is not secured, it’s likely Chinese and Russian spies can listen into calls, the paper said.

“If they are very worried about iPhones being tapped, they can use Huawei,” China’s Deputy Director of the Foreign Ministry Information Department, Hua Chunying, said in response to the news, as reported by the Washington Post’s Luna Lin.

Damn.

In case you’re just catching up, Hua’s jab is a reference to Chinese phone manufacturer Huawei, a company that’s finding it increasingly difficult to do business in the U.S. Read more…

Khashoggi’s fate shows the flip side of the surveillance state

It’s been over five years since NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden lifted the lid on government mass surveillance programs, revealing, in unprecedented detail, quite how deep the rabbit hole goes thanks to the spread of commercial software and connectivity enabling a bottomless intelligence-gathering philosophy of ‘bag it all’. Yet technology’s onward march has hardly broken its stride. […]
