Northern lights, step aside. It’s the South Pole’s time to shine. 

Very few of us will ever get to witness the spectacular light show that is the aurora australis. With incredibly strong winds and temperatures below -95°F, it’s nearly impossible to film there, too.

Shot by Robert Schwartz, a technician at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station, special equipment was created to keep the cameras running all night. The footage captured is a soothing and magical sight to behold.

These award-winning wildlife photos will remind you just how beautiful nature really is

In a world of screens, it’s easy to forget that we actually live on a lush green planet filled with diverse wildlife. 

But the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is here to remind you that nature will forever be more impressive and beautiful than even the most advanced CGI.

This year’s winner is a portrait of two golden snub-nosed monkeys. The photo, entitled “The Golden Couple,” was shot by Dutch photographer Marsel van Oosten in the forest of China’s Qinling Mountains, the only habitat for this endangered species.

The photo was selected because it celebrates “the majestic and otherworldly presence of nature, and reminds us of our crucial role in protecting it,” Natural History Museum Director Sir Michael Dixon said in a press release. Read more…

Honking horns and catcalls getting you down? Not to worry, city dwellers — the National Park Foundation is here to help.

The National Park Foundation (NPF) has launched PARKTRACKS, an audio portal that lets visitors play a 12-minute-long track of sounds captured at national parks across the country. In honor of the National Parks Service’s 102nd birthday, it’s also hosting a pop-up listening event in Seattle on Friday and Saturday. But anyone can turn on, tune in, drop out — with nature — on the website.

“We hope people will take a moment to pause, listen, and let their imaginations be captivated by the natural and cultural sounds of our national parks,” Alanna Sobel, a National Park Foundation representative, told Mashable over email. Read more…
