Gillian Anderson talks about masturbation with her on-screen son in Netflix’s ‘Sex Education’

It goes without saying that Gillian Anderson is completely and utterly iconic. But, this might be the first time we’ve seen her in a role where she asks her teenage son if he wants to chat about masturbation and asks fully-grown men about their f…

‘Anne with an E’ is the perfect escape from the news right now

A means of escape. That’s what I — and so many others — have been searching for in the midst of this deeply distressing news cycle.

I found that escape in the form of a charming, uplifting and, at times, moving period drama called Anne with an E, an adaptation of the beloved childhood classic Anne of Green Gables.

Anyone with a well-thumbed copy of the 1908 novel will know instantly the significance of this show’s title. “Anne with an ‘E’ looks much more distinguished,” says our eponymous heroine upon arrival at Green Gables, which later becomes her home. Set in turn-of-the-century Canada, the show’s setting bears no resemblance to modern day life as we know it — which is what makes this series such an effective way to take a break from politics, our timelines, and the world in general.  Read more…

A new Netflix special calls out standup comedy’s most pervasive bad habit

TwitterFacebook

Nanette seems more like the name of an elderly Shih Tzu than a groundbreaking comedy special. But Hannah Gadsby’s Netflix hour is indeed called Nanette — and it is a radical tour de force that calls out some of standup comedy’s worst shortcomings.

Stand-up has always been a dog-eat-dog world. From set stealers to hecklers, the obstacles facing the most privileged of comedians is substantial, and the underrepresented have it even worse.

Gadsby’s hour is a profound breakdown of the disadvantages she has faced as a gay woman—not just in comedy, but in life. During the course of her special, she concludes that for her own well-being, she ought to quit comedy. At the center of her argument is a fundamental flaw in the “rules” of self-deprecation. ‘Dear White People’ Season 2 is empowering and brilliant

TwitterFacebook

“This country is a mindfuck,” one character says early in Dear White People Season 2.

In its first 30 minutes alone, Dear White People Vol. II makes good on that highly relatable statement, with Sam (Logan Browning) arguing with the internet and trying to convince people out of their point of view before realizing that that almost never works.

Season 1 was written as President Obama’s second term drew to a close, when racism was supposed to be over, before there was any concept – or indeed, any real fear – of Trump’s America.

Season 2 was created in another era, with new responsibility. The country may be divided during Season 2, but Winchester’s historically black dorm has just been integrated. This only deepens the campus community’s fragile fissures, with an emerging culture of alt-right provocation seeping onto the Winchester University campus. Read more…
