Over the last couple of years, a once well-kept secret began to gain traction in New York media outlets: wealthy American investors, including VCs and hedge fund managers, had begun snapping up tracts of land in New Zealand, largely out of fear that a Trump administration could have a destabilizing effect on an already polarized […]

New Zealand introduces paid domestic violence leave in world first
In New Zealand, domestic victims can now take out a special type of leave, thanks to legislation that has been passed.
The Domestic Violence—Victims’ Protection Bill allows people to request up to 10 days of leave a year if they are affected by domestic violence, on top of regular sick and vacation entitlements.
It also protects domestic violence victims from being dismissed from their jobs or have their employment conditions downgraded. Green Party MP Jan Logie worked on the bill for 7 years, and pushed it through parliament in its third reading on Wednesday. Read more…

New Zealand’s so sick of being left off maps they’ve launched an entire ad campaign
New Zealand is continually omitted from maps of the world. Seriously, there’s an entire Reddit thread highlighting examples of the country being completely wiped from global existence.

And New Zealand’s just about done with it.
The country’s tourism board has launched a fun new ad campaign dubbed #getNZonthemap, with a commercial starring Kiwi Flight of the Conchords star Rhys Darby and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. They’re keen to get to the bottom of this blatant map omission, and they’re looking squarely at … Australia. Read more…

This particular trial of upvoting/downvoting buttons is limited to New Zealand […]

“Like many other businesses and people in town we have noticed an increasing trend of people thinking pj’s/onesies and dressing gowns are appropriate to wear in public,” wrote Hawera Cinema 2. Read more…
