Facebook’s News Feed changes were supposed to make us feel good. It’s not working.

TwitterFacebook

More than a year after Facebook changed its News Feed algorithm to make us feel better, new data suggests we’re still sharing the same old garbage as before.

NewsWhip, an analytics company that tracks how content spreads across Facebook, put out a new report looking at how last year’s News Feed changes have affected what’s being shared on Facebook. Unsurprisingly, its findings aren’t very encouraging.

For context: Mark Zuckerberg announced sweeping changes to News Feed last January, promising that “we feel a responsibility to make sure our services aren’t just fun to use, but also good for people’s well-being.” As a result, he said, the company would be making adjustments to News Feed in order to optimize for “helping you have more meaningful social interactions,” rather than pure engagement.  Read more…

Facebook urged to give users greater control over what they see

Academics at the universities of Oxford and Stanford think Facebook should give users greater transparency and control over the content they see on its platform. They also believe the social networking giant should radically reform its governance structures and processes to throw more light on content decisions, including by looping in more external experts to […]

Facebook’s election interference problem exponentially worse on eve of midterms, study suggests

An analysis of political advertisers running extensive campaigns on Facebook targeting users in the United States over the past six months has flagged a raft of fresh concerns about its efforts to tackle election interference — suggesting the social network’s self regulation is offering little more than a sham veneer of accountability. Dig down and […]

Facebook users becoming more cautious and critical, says Pew

Ahead of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg testifying before Congress later today, where she will be questioned alongside Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey as US lawmakers wrestle with how to regulate social media platforms (and even just to get bums on seats, given Google’s Larry Page declined to attend), the Pew Research Center has published new research suggesting […]

Facebook is shutting down Friend List Feeds today

Facebook is shutting down Friend List Feeds sometime today, according to a message posted in the Facebook app. The feature allowed users to scroll through only those posts from one of their designated friend lists – for example, family, work colleagues, neighbors, industry peers, and so on. Citizens of the world: Your Facebook News Feed is now local

TwitterFacebook

Facebook is committed to delivering local news to readers around the world.

The social network announced in January that it would update its News Feed to prioritize local news. At the time, the update was only for U.S. users. Today, Facebook’s head of news product Alex Hardiman and head of news partnerships Campbell Brown announced in a blog post that the changes will roll out globally.

The update will prioritize outlets that cover not only one city, but multiple nearby cities as well. “By expanding the scope of what may be considered local to people, we’re including other cities that people may care about and connecting people to local publishers from those cities,” the blog post reads.  Read more…

Facebook is now prioritizing local news globally

As Facebook continues to face fierce media scrutiny over how it handles user data, the company may well be wishing for some gentler headlines. So it’s perhaps no accident it’s chosen today to announce the international rollout of a News Feed tweak it made in the US, back in January, that’s designed to inject more local […]

Facebook to publishers: The News Feed algorithm isn’t why you’re failing

TwitterFacebook

It’s been a rocky year in Facebook and publisher relations, but the social network has a new — very blunt — message for struggling publishers: it’s probably your fault.

Speaking at a panel at South by Southwest, Facebook’s head of news products, Alex Hardiman, had some strong words for critics who say the company’s recent News Feed algorithm change is hurting publishers.

In response to a question about digital publisher Little Things, whose CEO blamed Facebook’s News Feed algorithm after the company shut down, Hardiman said “there’s a reason certain publishers don’t do well on Facebook.” Read more…
