Best gifts for gamers in the UK: What to get for the gamer in your life in 2019

TwitterFacebook

Shopping for a gamer sounds like it should be easy, but getting them the right gift can be a bit more complicated than you think. The good news: there’s so much to choose from. The bad news: there’s so much to choose from.

It’s even worse when you consider all the different kinds of gamers out there. From those who pledge allegiance to the PC master race to Nintendo purists and everything in between, it isn’t easy finding just the right gift to add to their setup. But if you nail it, you won’t find anyone more grateful than a gamer.

When shopping for a gamer, first determine your desired price point. For most, you’ll be able to grab a couple games under £100 and call it a day. Accessories like controllers and charging docks are another great mid-range price point. The next step up will be things like gaming consoles or a gaming laptop, which will run into the hundreds. If you’re looking to go all out and treat the gamer in your life to an epic gift, a brand new PC rig and setup could clock in at around £3,000.  Read more…

Nintendo reportedly has high-end and low-end Switch consoles in the works

TwitterFacebook

Nintendo released the Switch just over two years ago, in March 2017, and it’s not going anywhere. But it may soon have some company.

There are reportedly two separate Switch hardware revisions in the works, according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal. They could be released as early as summer 2019, presumably following an announcement at the annual E3 trade show, which happens in June.

While this info definitely lives in “rumor” territory, there are reasons to believe it. For one, the WSJ is an established media outlet and a trusted source of news — including scoops like this one. The report also cites multiple sources — “parts suppliers and software developers for Nintendo who have access to a prototype of the machine” — so it’s not just one, lone voice doing the anonymous talking. Get a better grip with a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller — now on sale at Amazon

TwitterFacebook

We can all agree that the Nintendo Switch is awesome — there’s just one issue with it, though: The system’s included JoyCons can get extremely uncomfortable. If your hands are on the larger side, the JoyCons can feel small and almost impossible to use (especially when playing games that require speed and accuracy). Well, Nintendo heard the complaints, and developed the Switch Pro Controller in response.

You can grab one of these Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers for $13 off on Amazon right now — check it out and increase your one-on-one time with your Nintendo Switch.

By significantly cutting down on discomfort, the Nintendo Pro Controller is able to improve your overall stamina and gameplay performance — say goodbye to those hand cramps. The controller doesn’t sacrifice the best features of its predecessor, though, so don’t worry about an unfair tradeoff. HD Rumble, motion controls, and built-in amiibo support are still here, and it’s all completely wireless (charged via USB-C cable — which is included in the package). The Pro Controller is supported in both docked and undocked mode, so you can seamlessly switch between options while you’re going through your next replay of Read more…

Nintendo is on to something with its simple and cheap Labo-powered VR

TwitterFacebook

It was announced as “simple VR.” And that’s exactly what it delivers.

Nintendo chose wisely in using Labo to plot the company’s path into a virtual reality future. There’s already a global market familiar with the idea of “cardboard VR” — and cardboard, of course, is the glue that holds Labo together — and the low-tech approach keeps the price family-friendly.

Now, having actually spent some time playing with the Labo VR Kit, I’m happy to confirm: It’s good stuff.

Let’s talk about what’s in the box first. A basic $40 starter set gets you the VR Kit software, the cardboard pieces you’ll need to build the headset — which includes a hard plastic component for the lenses — and the Toy-Con Blaster, one of several build-it-yourself peripherals that work in tandem with the headset. Nintendo announces Shareable, a Labo cardboard VR Kit for Switch

TwitterFacebook

In a surprise to practically everyone, Nintendo announced a virtual reality Labo kit for the Switch — and it’s out April 12.

The “simple” cardboard VR set will serve as the fourth kit in the Labo line and offer up six new DIY Toy-Con creations for players to make and enjoy. The project marks Nintendo’s first foray into the world of virtual reality since the release of the much-maligned Virtual Boy in 1995.

The new VR Kit comes in two packages, with the more expensive $80 option including everything in the Shareable lineup: Toy-Con VR Goggles, Blaster, Camera, Bird, Wind Pedal, and Elephant — plus a screen holder, safety cap, and game software.  Read more…

A new NES game was just discovered and it’s a gem for wrestling fans

TwitterFacebook

A never-before-seen wrestling game for the Nintendo Entertainment System was just unearthed by a YouTuber on Tuesday — which is basically unheard of in the world of Nintendo.

UWC is a wrestling game that has been kept secret from the public since it was first seen by eyes at Nintendo in 1989. The game was purchased from a former Nintendo employee by YouTuber and game collector Stephen Reese, a.k.aArchon 1981, who made a video about the game and plans to release the ROM online.

Take a look at some of the gameplay:

The fact that there is a real playable game that was never released on the NES nor ever even advertised is very bizarre. There’s a backstory behind this game that, unfortunately, we may never get to hear about. The only thing we know for sure is that this game was play-tested by someone who worked at Nintendo.
