‘Minecraft’ update removes in-game references to its controversial creator

TwitterFacebook

Microsoft, which owns Minecraft, appears to be distancing itself and Minecraft from its original creator, Markus “Notch” Persson.

The latest Minecraft update to hit the Java version of the game removed a couple of references to Notch that would sometimes appear on the game’s home screen next to the title. Twitter user decrepitlab pointed these changes out on Wednesday. While we don’t know for sure why exactly Notch’s name was taken off the home screen, it’s possible that this move stems from the many questionable things he’s said online over the years.

Samsung has a 5G prototype phone with a corner notch

TwitterFacebook

Samsung still hasn’t officially launched a flagship smartphone with a notch, but it sure looks like it’s seriously considering the idea.

At a demonstration held during Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Tech Summit in Hawaii on Tuesday, Samsung showed off a 5G phone with a very interesting notch, located in the upper-right corner of the device.

Very little is known about the device, except that it’s used to showcase 5G video streaming, but judging from the photos, it appears that the phone’s selfie camera is located within the notch.  Read more…

Huawei’s next phone will kill the notch with a ‘hole punch’ selfie camera

TwitterFacebook

Essential birthed the notch with the PH-1 and Apple popularized it with the iPhone X, but Asia’s biggest smartphone makers already look ready to kill it and replace it with a less offensive-looking hole cutout in the upper corner.

Samsung teased this “Infinity-O” or “hole punch” camera screen at its developer conference a few weeks ago — the Galaxy S10 might be its first with the display — but China’s Huawei might beat it to market first.

Huawei’s expected to announce the Nova 4 with a front that’s nearly all display on Dec. 3, according to The Verge. Read more…

Oppo’s F9 phone has the most beautiful notch you’ve ever seen

TwitterFacebook

OK, we get it: Not everyone likes, prefers or even tolerates the smartphone notch.

But most flagship smartphones these days have it, so any attempt to make it less obtrusive — or even actually pretty — gets a thumbs up from us.

Oppo’s F9 is one such phone. It’s got a tiny, waterdrop-shaped notch that houses the selfie camera and the speaker while making the phone stand out at the same time.

Oppo calls this the “Waterdrop Screen” and yes, it is quite similar to the Essential Phone’s screen, but the subtle differences in design make Oppo’s solution a bit less intrusive. The phone has a small chin on the bottom as well, but still maintains a crazy-high, 90.8% screen-to-body ratio.  Read more…

I would happily ditch the selfie camera for a full-screen phone

Once a month or so, I’m reminded that my phone has a front-facing camera when I accidentally hit the toggle button, only to be greeted with a closeup image of my own, dumb face. Honestly, I can’t remember the the last time I used the thing — not intentionally, at least. I tried scrolling through […]

Lenovo teases a slick, all-screen smartphone that doesn’t have a notch

Lenovo has teased a new arrival that might top Apple’s iPhone X in a bid to deliver a true all-screen smartphone. Apple’s iPhone X goes very close but for a tiny bezel and its distinctive notch, but Lenovo’s Z5 seems like it might go a step further, according to a teaser sketch (above) shared by Lenovo VP […]

Vivo V9 Review: Living with the Android notch

TwitterFacebook

TL;DR review: The Vivo V9 is one of the first Android smartphones to sport an iPhone X-like notch. But it’s far cheaper than its role model, and it performs well — especially in the selfie department. The rear camera won’t wow you, though.

The notch is no longer just an iPhone X thing. Numerous Android phone makers have this year decided to launch flagship smartphones that feature a notch on top of their screen, which gives us a few extra pixels to play with.  Read more…

Essential is working on getting rid of the notch

TwitterFacebook

Essential Phone had the notch before the iPhone X was even out — and a far smaller one, too. However, unlike some other Android phone makers, which are adding a notch to their phone just to make them more similar to the iPhone, Essential is already trying to get rid of it completely.

This is according to an interesting patent originally filed by Essential in February 2017 and dug up by TechCrunch. In it, Essential describes a system that places the camera lens below the screen.

The idea is simple. Since the LCD screen could be made out of elements that are mostly transparent, one could place the camera below a “substantially transparent” part of the screen and have the phone disable that part of the screen when a photo is being taken.  Read more…
