People are sending thoughts and prayers to the NRA, which says it’s in financial trouble

TwitterFacebook

The NRA says it’s in deep financial trouble, and a lot of Twitter isn’t buying it, as evidenced by the way they’ve turned a rhetorical trope on its head.

Rolling Stone reports the NRA is complaining, as part of a lawsuit against the state of New York, that the state pressured insurers to cut ties with the organization. Without the necessary liability insurance, the NRA says it will be “unable to exist … or pursue its advocacy mission.”

It’s understandable if you’re a bit skeptical hearing this news. After all, the NRA has contributed millions to the campaign coffers of members of congress across the country, a big chunk of which has gone to GOP politiciansRead more…

The NRA tried to co-opt anti-gun violence #WearOrange movement, and it backfired

TwitterFacebook

No, this is not a repeat: The NRA has gone and done something stupid on social media.

Friday marked the start of Everytown’s annual “#WearOrange” campaign to fight gun violence. A huge mixture of celebs and everyday folks jumped on board, many sparked by recent school shootings in Parkland, Florida and Santa Fe, Texas (just to name a few, sadly).

Have you shared your #WearOrange look yet? 🧡🍊 pic.twitter.com/BrvUZn8iMU

But that bull in the china shop you hear is the NRA, who couldn’t leave well enough alone and stumbled awkwardly into the effort. Not just awkwardly getting in on the efforts but, also trying stunt on Everytown’s efforts by claiming the color orange is their color because hunters and sportsmen often wear the color for safety reasons.  Read more…

Good guy with no gun James Shaw Jr. disarmed Waffle House shooter

TwitterFacebook

Tragedy struck the Antioch neighborhood of Nashville early Sunday morning when an armed man shot two individuals outside of a Waffle House before proceeding inside and killing two more.

In the face of that horror, reports the Tennessean, one Waffle House customer, 29-year-old James Shaw Jr., managed to wrestle an AR-15 rifle free from the shooter and likely saved lives in the process.

Now, although Shaw is quick to brush the claim aside, he is being hailed as a hero.

James Shaw Jr. was identified as the hero who helped stop the Waffle House shooter this morning. He says he doesn’t feel like a hero, which is exactly what you’d expect a real hero to sayhttps://t.co/0N08omw80u

NRA tweets glamour shot of AR-15 while students hold National School Walkout protesting gun violence

TwitterFacebook

The NRA had a pretty tactless response to the National School Walkout on Wednesday.

March 14 marks one month since the tragic mass shooting in Parkland, Fla. that left 17 people dead, and students nationwide are walking out of classes to honor those who died and protest gun violence.

On a day being used to remember children killed by an AR-15, the National Rifle Association, a pro-gun lobbying group, tweeted a photo of an AR-15 with the caption, “I’ll control my own guns, thank you.”

Samantha Bee tells NRA members to break free — and join Scientology

TwitterFacebook

In the wake of the Parkland school shooting, the National Rifle Association is facing a lot of scrutiny from Americans who are tired of gun violence.

So, in a new PSA aired on Wednesday, Full Frontal host Samantha Bee offered some advice to NRA members — break free and join Scientology instead.

In one minute, Bee skewers both groups. “Is Scientology safe?” she asks. “Of course not! It’s bonkers, but it’s safer for the rest of us.”

It’s quite something. Bee continues, “Who needs a rifle to defend themselves when, as an OT VII, you could blow someone away with your brain?”  Read more…
