NYPD to Google: Quit tracking drunk-driving checkpoints on Waze

The New York Police Department would like Google to stop tracking its Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) checkpoint locations.

Over the weekend, the NYPD sent a cease-and-desist letter to Google over a feature in its Waze app that marks police locations. According to the document obtained by NYC Streetsblogs, the NYPD is specifically concerned about the listing of police DWI checkpoints.

“Individuals who post the locations of DWI checkpoints may be engaging in criminal conduct since such actions could be intentional attempts to prevent and/or impair the administration of the DWI laws,” says the letter. “The posting of such information for public consumption is irresponsible since it only serves to aid impaired and intoxicated drivers to evade checkpoints and encourage reckless driving.” Read more…

NYPD surveillance drone will fly above Times Square on New Year’s Eve

It’s a bird, it’s a plane — it’s a…surveillance drone?

For the first time in history, the New York Police Department will fly a drone over Times Square to monitor the crowd during the annual New Year’s Eve celebration. The drone will surveil the event alongside more than 1,200 cameras in order to assist around 7,000 police officers who will be on duty, according to the Associated Press.

The remote-controlled quadcopter will never fly directly over the crowd and will be tied to a building in an enclosed area as a safety precaution.

The NYPD will also be deploying technology that prevents unauthorized drone usage during the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Times Square. Read more…

NYPD pulls thousands of body cameras after one caught fire while a police officer was wearing it

The New York Police Department is pulling thousands of body cameras from the field after one of them caught on fire while a police officer was wearing it.

The Daily Beast reports that a Vievu model LE-5 body camera “burst into flames” early Sunday morning while an officer was wearing it right outside a Staten Island police precinctAccording to the NYPD, “an officer retrieved a body-cam for deployment on a midnight tour and noticed there was smoke exiting from the bottom portal and immediately removed it. After it was safely removed, the device exploded.”

The officer wearing the faulty body camera was not injured. Read more…
