Oppo F11 Pro hands-on: Huge, notch-less screen and a 48-megapixel camera

TwitterFacebook

You may not be very familiar with Chinese smartphone maker Oppo, so here’s what you should know: The company makes pretty good phones and sells them at an affordable price. It also has ties with OnePlus, and the company’s F-series phones are often precursors for the next OnePlus phone.

With that in mind, I present to you the new, Oppo F11 Pro. I’ve had some limited hands-on time with it, but — like previous Oppo F-series phones — it’s a mix of pretty powerful features and a decent price.

Don’t expect too much, though. Fancy tech like Oppo’s 10x optical zoom is nowhere to be seen, and the Oppo F11 Pro (despite the “pro” moniker) is not a device that can measure up to the most powerful flagships of today. On the other hand, certain features make it an interesting contender in the amazingly competitive mid-ranger arena.  Read more…

OnePlus CEO not impressed by folding phones

TwitterFacebook

BARCELONA — OnePlus CEO Pete Lau, who is very picky about corners, doesn’t like the ones he sees on the folding phones here at MWC19.

“It’s not product excellence, having to stop at that level of large curvature,” he said through a translator. “My focus is on the flexible OLED technology, and as that advances and gets really good, what possibilities there are. When those fields can get really small and tight, what possibilities are there for the screen technology?”

Of course Lau would be talking about the degrees of fold. The cult phone-maker CEO, who has an engineering background, is informally known as the chief product designer at OnePlus, and once showed me how he obsessed over the corner radius when developing the OnePlus 6. Read more…

OnePlus CEO: In the 5G era, storage recedes

TwitterFacebook

BARCELONA—The 5G era may be the end of the storage race in phones. As Samsung deploys its 1TB Galaxy S10+ and SanDisk shows off a 1TB microSD card, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau said on a panel here at MWC19 that super-fast cloud access may make these giant levels of local storage obsolete.

“People are now concerned with the size of storage on their device for the sake of storing more photos, but [5G] will allow for more immediate cloud storage,” Lau said. “That will allow people to no longer focus on whether the phone has 128GB of 512GB of storage, and it will enable a total change in our photography experience on the device.” Read more…

OnePlus, EE and Qualcomm puts a call out for 5G apps

Today at MWC Barcelona OnePlus CEO Pete Lau unveiled an initiative to spur apps for 5G networks. The timing is right, too. With 5G launching around the world this year, carriers, phone makers and consumers alike have yet to develop a killer app for the massive increase of speed provided by 5G. Basically, OnePlus is […]

What to expect from Mobile World Congress 2019

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: 2019 just might be the year that smartphones get fun again. After years of similar form factors and slight upgrades, the mobile industry’s back is against the wall. For the first time ever, sales are down, owning to economic factors and slower upgrade cycles. Most people […]

OnePlus is making a 5G phone, but it won’t be cheap

TwitterFacebook

Here’s a fact about 5G phones you probably didn’t think about: They’ll be expensive — at least at first.

According to OnePlus CEO Pete Lau, who spoke with The Verge, OnePlus is indeed working on a 5G phone, but it’ll cost $200 to $300 more than the company’s upcoming 4G flagship phone.

Lau didn’t share any more details — “there’s a lot of specifics still to look at,” he said — but it sounds like OnePlus just can’t make the 5G phone as cheap as it’d like to, so it’s switched to working on two flagships in parallel, something the company hasn’t done before.  Read more…
