As Twitter stock soars, its video app Periscope is suffering from neglect
When Twitter announced it had acquired Periscope in March 2015, the app was full of promise. It was one of the first to let anyone broadcast video of themselves live from anywhere in the world, using just a smartphone. It also let them interact with viewers through real-time comments and a little heart button used to express that you “liked” someone’s video. By the end of 2015, Apple crowned Periscope iOS app of the year — and Twitter had a hit on its hands.
But three years later, Periscope is a shell of its former self. The internet celebrities who once dedicated much of their time to Periscope have mostly abandoned it, choosing to invest time into Facebook Live instead, or to quit streaming altogether. Those who have continued using the service have expressed frustrations with Twitter and its commitment to the community. Ask any Periscope user what its like in 2018, and you’ll hear wild stories about backstabbing, abandonment, and generally being mistreated by the community and company. Read more…

Yes, it’s true. Hillary Clinton did say “activist bitches supporting bitches,” as other media outlets reported on Friday after a tweet from political commentator Alex Mohajer went viral.
Why? Someone who ran an activist organization named after that phrase asked her to do so during a lunch event in New York this week.
You can watch Clinton say it here:

Sending and viewing snaps isn’t just for Snapchat anymore. No, we’re not talking about jumping ship to Instagram Stories.
On Tuesday, Snap introduced an un-Snapchat-like move that allows users to send links of Snapchat Stories for viewing outside of the Snapchat app. This change means anyone — not just Snapchat users — can see snaps from celebrities, media partners, and everyday users via desktop and mobile thanks to a new web player.
So, yeah, forget about Snapchat being just for the kids on Snapchat. Anyone can see what’s happening on Snapchat, at least from publicly shared snaps. The move opens up Snapchat in a way that’s similar to Twitter introducing embedded tweets in 2011 and Facebook with embedded posts in 2013. Media companies, for example, could use embeddable Stories to share Snapchat’s exclusive footage from breaking news events, which is one of Snap’s big bets. The links do disappear after 30 days, however. Read more…

Patreon, the crowdfunding site popular with vloggers, podcasters, and other content creators, is updating its Trust and Safety department with better tools and more human moderators, making it easier to report inappropriate content.
The decision comes as the 4-year-old startup becomes an even more of an attractive source of revenue for content creators, especially in the wake of YouTube’s rule changes for monetization.
With the update, there are no changes to Patreon’s terms of service or community guidelines. Rather, it’s fixing Patreon’s “archaic” content reporting tool, Patreon’s head of legal Colin Sullivan told Mashable. Read more…

Fiona the hippo has a TV show. You won’t find it on Animal Planet, and don’t bother searching for it on Netflix. The seven-episode (plus a Christmas special) series is one of the most popular series on Facebook Watch.
What is Facebook Watch? To most users, it’s that TV-shaped icon in the menu at the bottom of the app. In reality, it’s Facebook’s big video play, an attempt to cultivate original programming exclusive to the social network, and maybe take a bite out of Netflix, YouTube, and even TV while doing so.
In a conversation with Mashable, one partner jokingly — but tellingly — called the new-ish Facebook video platform “Un-Watch-able,” seemingly a reference to poor viewership figures. But while some publishers have struggled to see traction in their video series, others like Cincinnati Zoo’s The Fiona Show have attracted millions of viewers since Watch’s debut at the end of summer 2017. This startup thinks it can share product reviews better than YouTube
Two of the biggest tech companies, Google and Facebook, have been competing as the internet’s biggest destinations for video. And yet, a small startup is betting it has a shot of nabbing their views by narrowing in on one of YouTube’s most popular styles.
Eight TV is an app focused on product reviews — by anyone and for anyone (anyone who carries a smartphone and probably likes Snapchat, that is). Shows can be created in minutes, often shot with selfie cameras. All videos are linked to a webpage to buy the item. The app pulls from the more than 100 million products in Amazon’s database.

Snapchat is getting a little geekier.
SYFY WIRE has launched GEEKLY, a Snapchat Show that covers science fiction, fantasy, paranormal, and superhero news and culture as Snap and SYFY expand their digital entertainment programming.
Premiering Thursday with new episodes dropping weekly at 6 a.m. ET, GEEKLY will cover “what’s going on that week in the genre at large and then use the news of the week as a catalyst to allow the two hosts to really debate,” said Matthew Chiavelli, SVP of digital for SYFY. “If you heard two people in a bar having a really spirited debate, we’re hoping to capture that energy.” Read more…

Stop me if you’ve heard this one: Facebook is crushing Snapchat. Well, forget that, because I’m interested in a much bigger tech company Facebook is poised to overtake: Google’s YouTube.
Facebook has managed to grow, outpace, and marginalize its competitors thanks to its huge user base, massive data collection operation, and the breakneck speed at which the Facebook engineering teams execute. We’ve seen Facebook steamroll several social networks over the years.
Now, Facebook is taking video more seriously than ever with its new product Watch, and I predict it will ultimately overtake YouTube as the biggest video players. Read more…
