MIT researchers say memory splitting breakthrough could prevent another Meltdown or Spectre

Virtually every modern computer processor was thrown under the bus earlier this year when researchers found a fundamental design weakness in Intel, AMD and ARM chips, making it possible to steal sensitive data from the computer’s memory. The Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities — which date back to 1995 — punched holes in the walls that […]

Google has announced changes to the licensing model for its Android mobile operating system in Europe,  including introducing a fee for licensing some of its own brand apps, saying it’s doing so to comply with a major European antitrust ruling this summer. In July the region’s antitrust regulators hit Google with a recordbreaking $5BN fine for […]

You know you love Windows 95, and now it’s an app

TwitterFacebook

For kids of a certain era, Windows 95 was part of our first experience with computers.

If the relatively ancient operating system still holds a special place in your heart, you’ll be glad to know that it’s available as an app for Mac, Windows and Linux.

Put together by Slack dev Felix Rieseberg, the 129mb file downloadable from GitHub allows you to reminisce on the old days of MS Paint and wasting time on Solitaire.

The operating system is encased in electron, a framework for building cross-platform apps with HTML and CSS.

There are, of course, some things that don’t work. Minesweeper doesn’t really let you do the sweeping, and Internet Explorer won’t let you surf the net — as it simply doesn’t connect to the web. Read more…

TwitterFacebook

Google is already working on an operating system that may replace Android in the next five years.

The tech giant has reportedly been tinkering on the OS, codenamed “Fuchsia,” for over two years and now has more than 100 engineers working on the project, according to Bloomberg.

Unlike Android, which was designed as an operating system primarily for smartphones and devices with touchscreens, Fuchsia is said to put voice-controls and AI front and center.

“It’s being designed to better accommodate voice interactions and frequent security updates and to look the same across a range of devices, from laptops to tiny internet-connected sensors,” Bloomberg reports. Read more…

One day, Google’s Fuchsia OS may become a real thing
