March For Our Lives activists go dark on social media to mark Parkland anniversary

TwitterFacebook

To mark the first anniversary of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, March For Our Lives and its organizers will go dark on social media between February 14th through the 17th.

They say their silence, which includes declining requests for interviews during that period, is out of respect for the friends, classmates, and school staff killed in the shooting. (In order to interview a student organizer about the blackout, Mashable agreed to publish this story no later than February 13.)

“We’re taking this route because it’s a chance for us to look back at our community and for us to give ourselves time and really allow the victims’ voices to take the microphone,” says Adam Alhanti, the director of special projects of March For Our Lives, who will graduate from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School this year.  Read more…

Brett Kavanaugh snubs Parkland victim’s father at Senate confirmation hearing

TwitterFacebook

Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee got off to quite a raucous start on Tuesday. There were protests and clashes between Democratic and Republican senators, but it was an odd snub made by Kavanaugh that’s getting the most attention.

As Kavanaugh left his table upon the beginning of a lunch break, a man can be seen approaching Kavanaugh and extending his hand for a handshake. After a brief look, Kavanaugh turned and walked away, never shaking the man’s hand.

Wow, here’s Kavanaugh giving @fred_guttenberg a contemptuous look before turning his back on him. Guttenberg’s daughter was killed in the Parkland gun massacre pic.twitter.com/Fz9e0gwytv

The NRA tried to co-opt anti-gun violence #WearOrange movement, and it backfired

TwitterFacebook

No, this is not a repeat: The NRA has gone and done something stupid on social media.

Friday marked the start of Everytown’s annual “#WearOrange” campaign to fight gun violence. A huge mixture of celebs and everyday folks jumped on board, many sparked by recent school shootings in Parkland, Florida and Santa Fe, Texas (just to name a few, sadly).

Have you shared your #WearOrange look yet? 🧡🍊 pic.twitter.com/BrvUZn8iMU

But that bull in the china shop you hear is the NRA, who couldn’t leave well enough alone and stumbled awkwardly into the effort. Not just awkwardly getting in on the efforts but, also trying stunt on Everytown’s efforts by claiming the color orange is their color because hunters and sportsmen often wear the color for safety reasons.  Read more…
