Pete Davidson shocked ‘SNL’ when he compared R. Kelly to the Catholic Church

TwitterFacebook

Pete Davidson kicked off his Weekend Update segment on the latest Saturday Night Live with a comment that got a shocked response from the show’s live audience: “If you support the Catholic Church, isn’t that the same thing as being an R. Kelly fan?”

The rest of the segment actually moved away from Kelly’s specific case to focus more on the growing phenomenon of “problematic faves.” You know, celebs whose behavior — in whatever horrible form it might take — makes it hard to carry on as a fan.

Davidson is making a “separate the art from the artist” case here, but with a twist. He thinks, probably not incorrectly, that as time goes on, more of our faves are going to have their skeletons unearthed. So instead of writing off their various contributions to pop culture, Davidson suggests owning it instead — but making a small charitable contribution whenever we engage with their work. Read more…

Dan Crenshaw visited ‘SNL’ to call for unity. It’s Pete Davidson’s fault.

TwitterFacebook

Pete Davidson isn’t a gifted comedian or anything. He just has a knack for creating a scene.

During a recent Saturday Night Live Weekend Update appearance, he made the ill-advised decision to mock the injury that a U.S. military veteran — then a Congressional candidate — sustained in combat. It was a dumb, tasteless joke and Davidson was rightfully dragged for his bad judgment.

On Saturday night, that veteran — the newly elected Texas Congressman, Lt. Com. Dan Crenshaw — paid a visit to the SNL set. He was there to hear an apology from Davidson and get in a few shots of his own, which he did. They were funny. Davidson is an easy mark, after all. Read more…
