WhatsApp continues fight against fake news with new ‘search image’ feature

TwitterFacebook

WhatsApp is continuing to ramp up the fight against fake news, this time setting its sight on visual misinformation.

The Facebook-owned messaging app is currently testing a new “search image” feature that allows users to easily upload an image found on its platform to Google, according to WABetaInfo. The image tool was discovered in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android.

With the tap of a button, WhatsApp will send a photo from within its application to the search giant. The messaging app will then direct users to a Google search results page that shows “similar or equal images” elsewhere on the web.  Read more…

Flickr announces all public Creative Commons works are now protected from deletion

TwitterFacebook

Just days before Flickr mass deletes photos across its platform, the company has decided to hit its users with some good news.

In a blog post on Friday, Flickr announced that it will allow free accounts to host and upload more than the 1,000 photo limit if the photos are licensed freely under Creative Commons. Users can change their current photos to Creative Commons licensing, as well as upload future similarly licensed photos, to their free Flickr accounts.

After Flickr, one of the largest photo-sharing website, was acquired by Smugmug last year, the company announced sweeping changes to its account policies. Free accounts would be limited to no more than 1,000 image uploads. Photos exceeding that limit would be deleted from users’ free accounts. If a Flickr user wanted to keep those photos or upload more than 1000, they would need to upgrade to a paid “pro” level account. Read more…

Flickr says it won’t delete Creative Commons photos

Flickr will spare both the Flickr Commons and Creative Commons photos from deletion, the now SmugMug-owned company announced today. Flickr’s new business model could see works deleted from Creative Commons

Following yesterday’s series of announcements about Flickr’s plans to revamp its site under its new owners, SmugMug, one major concern has been raised: its decision to now limit free accounts to 1,000 photos may impact the number of photos available through Creative Commons. Creative Commons is a U.S. nonprofit that helps make creative works — […]
