Apple walks back statement after freaking out podcasters

Podcasters can now breathe easy.

Apple is walking back an emailed statement to podcasters on Wednesday that seemed to suggest shows would be rejected or removed from Apple Podcasts if the episode numbers were included in episode titles.

The Cupertino, CA-based company rushed to send a clarification email on Thursday making clear that shows were not going to be removed if they historically included episode numbers in their titles.

The confusion began earlier this week when Apple sent out an email with a list of best practices for podcast metadata — information connected to each show detailing titles, authors, and episode descriptions. The company recommended avoiding using placeholder text such as “[Title goes here]” and spamming keywords for blatant SEO purposes in podcast descriptions.  Read more…

How I podcast: Effectively Wild’s Ben Lindbergh

Last month, Spotify announced that it had paid $340 million for Gimlet and Anchor in a push to make its mark on podcasting. But while it’s encouraging to see media giants throw weight and money behind the medium, the beauty of the format has always been its accessibility. It’s the rare form of entertainment that’s […]

The Australian company dropped news about the firmware update at 10PM PT on February 28, bringing the podcasting board’s most eagerly awaited feature as part of its first update since hitting retail late last year. Music-streaming king Spotify sees a future in podcasts.

The company announced on Wednesday that it has made two huge acquisitions that firmly plant Spotify in the podcasting business. The music-streaming giant has bought Gimlet Media Inc., a popular podcast producer, and Anchor, a platform that helps creators produce and publish their podcasts.

According to Recode, Spotify is paying around $230 million for Gimlet. Recode first reported that Spotify and Gimlet were in talks last week. It’s currently unknown how much Spotify spent on Anchor.

Recode points out that the acquisition puts Spotify in the content creation business for the first time — something the company hasn’t done in its almost 11 years in the music industry.  Read more…

The Rodecaster Pro gets multitrack recording next month

As a frequent podcast host/producer/editor, I found very few things to quibble with when I reviewed Rode Microphone’s Rodcaster Pro. There was, however, one very big issue: multitrack recording. For all of the great things you can do on the fly, the podcasting mixing board wasn’t great when it came to post-production. Regardless of how […]

Anchor says it’s ‘powering’ 40 percent of new podcasts

Podcasting’s greatest asset has always been its accessibility — for consumer and creator alike. But even the simplest medium requires a little know-how, and Anchor’s overarching goal has long been to further lower the barrier of entry for those looking to take the leap. It’s not perfect, and it’s not for everyone, but the service […]

The Rodecaster Pro is a perfect centerpiece to a home podcasting studio

My podcasting rig is simple: Two microphones, a Tascam recorder, two XLR cables. I’ve upgraded things a bit in the past year — improved the mics, bought some foam windscreens and bought a pair of tabletop, foldable mic stands. But the principle is the same: take nothing I can’t fit into a laptop sleeve. It’s […]

Today, effectively […]
