Berlin zoo’s new polar bear is the adorable ray of light we need

As we struggle our way through the cold mud towards spring amidst a barrage of awful news, it’s good to know that we can still find respite in the most reliable of places: adorable zoo animals.

This latest example comes in the debut of a new polar bear cub at Berlin’s Tierpark Zoo. The three-month old cub is the offspring of mother Tonja and was born on December 1, 2018, but she just made her public debut on Friday.

Most polar bear populations are in okay shape today, and this comes with a problem: Climate change deniers, often in the form of bloggers, employ this fleeting reality to promote skepticism about the idea that the planet is warming.

The broad argument is that if polar bears — who largely depend on Arctic sea ice to find food — are doing okay, then there must be doubt about the effect that fossil fuel emissions have on the global climate.

Coldilocks is the oldest Polar Bear in the United States and she celebrated her 37th birthday on Thursday at the Philadelphia Zoo.

The average lifespan of polar bears in captivity is usually 23 years old according to zoo officials but Coldilocks is benefiting from personal care at the Philadelphia Zoo.
