It’s damn cold, but heat records in the U.S. still dominate

TwitterFacebook

Yes, records for cold temperatures are breaking as an off-balance polar vortex sloshes over a vast region of the U.S.

And while it sure feels frigid out there, overall, the number of daily cold records set in the U.S. has been consistently dwarfed by the number of warm or high temperature records. The score isn’t even close. High records over the last decade are outpacing low records by a rate of two to one.

Earth has warmed by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius) since the late 1800s, and this boost in warming translates to significantly more heat records than cold records. But during winter — particularly when biting Arctic air sometimes washes over the U.S. — cold records will still be made.  Read more…

Girl’s wild frozen hair shows the power of the polar vortex

TwitterFacebook

Alright, Mother Nature, you’ve done your thing — and we’re all very impressed — but this is getting out of hand.

In recent days, extremely cold temperatures have caused everything from 2,600 flight delays to the halting of U.S. postal service delivery (and they never stop for anything). But if there’s anything we can learn from cold Midwesterners, it’s that this polar vortex doesn’t need to be a polar snorefest.

Iowa native @taylor_scallon showed the power of negative temps when she shared a video of herself  outside with a very interesting hairstyle. She managed to get her hair to defy gravity and freeze straight up when she went outside with wet hair.   Read more…

Polar vortex got you down? These are 10 of the best space heaters.

TwitterFacebook

Brrrr…. It’s cold in here.

The winter months can be harsh since the days are shorter and the weather is, of course, much, much colder — especially if you live in the midwest and east coast. Temperatures can drop down to below zero Fahrenheit from day-to-day, while having a roof over your head doesn’t guarantee instant warmth.

So how can you turn up the heat in one part of the home without turning it up everywhere else? If you invest in a good space heater, you can assure yourself a nice and toasty winter as you anxiously wait for the spring to finally come. Read more…

Teslas, other EVs struggle in the polar vortex

TwitterFacebook

Electric vehicle owners are discovering the harsh reality of driving a battery-powered vehicle in below-freezing temperatures like those sweeping across the Midwest.

Most drivers know in theory that cold weather adversely affects the car’s and its battery’s abilities, but it’s another thing to see your range plummet on the dashboard next to the frigid outside and interior temperature. In these type of conditions the vehicles have a hard time warming up. Even charging is slowed down. So on Wednesday, EV drivers were dealing with way less range than they were used to — and some Tesla owners couldn’t even get into their frozen cars. Read more…

Bored Midwesterners are throwing boiling water into the frigid wind during the polar vortex

TwitterFacebook

All across the Midwest this week, people are extremely cold — extremely cold and extremely bored.

Temperatures dropped as low as minus-60 Farenheit in parts of the Midwest on Wednesday, forcing schools to close and sequestering workers in their homes. To combat their cabin fever, some folks have started stepping out of their homes for a brief second to boiling hot water into the frigid air.

Of course the water, once tossed into the wind, quickly solidifies and turns into snow.

It’s actually way more entertaining than it sounds. I’m dead on the inside, and I’ll still watch this middle school science class trick any day: Read more…

Polar vortex 2019: Combat the cold with these 50 products

TwitterFacebook

Shout out to everyone who said they “couldn’t wait for winter” during the summer last year — you’re about to get what you asked for.

We thought we were done with unbearable temperatures after a polar vortex swept through the U.Sa few weeks ago, making temperatures dip down to single (and in some places, negative) digits. Unfortunately, we’re not in the clear just yet. Actually, it’s about to be worse: The end of January through the beginning of February are expected to be the coldest stretch of the year for much of the country.
