New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is putting children first

“If you ask me why I’m in politics, my answer will be simple: children,” New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told the audience at Mashable’s 9th annual Social Good Summit on Sept. 23.

On the one-year anniversary of the general election that elevated her to power, Ardern spoke about one of her greatest passions as a politician: helping kids.

“When I came into office, somewhat surprisingly, I did so with the single-minded determination to improve the lives of children in New Zealand,” she said, speaking alongside the executive director of UNICEF, Henrietta Fore.

“As one of our 12 priorities as a government we want to make New Zealand the best place in the world to be a child,” Ardern said. “Not to raise children, but to be a child.” Read more…

Thailand’s prime minister used an actual cut-out of himself to escape the media

TwitterFacebook

Politicians evading questions from the media is nothing new.

Waffling, obscure answers, walk-outs, diversions — these tactics have all been around for decades.

What hasn’t been around for decades is the tactic of placing a full, life-size cardboard cutout of yourself in front a group of waiting journalists and telling them to “ask this guy” before you casually peace out.

Well, here to prove that there’s a first time for everything is Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha:

Australia’s Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was issued a A$250 ticket (US$193) on Friday for not wearing a lifejacket when he was moving his dinghy near his Sydney home earlier this week.

The fine was confirmed by the New South Wales maritime authority, who are on the lookout for boaters who are breaking the law — seemingly no matter how distinguished they may be.

The executive director for NSW Maritime, Angus Mitchell, said it was “a timely reminder during the holiday season to always wear a lifejacket.” Photos of the prime minister sans lifejacket were published in The Australian, which noted the law that had been broken. Read more…

Amir Khan asked if there’s ever been a female Prime Minister and the internet couldn’t even

TwitterFacebook

Amir Khan may be very good at boxing, but it turns out he’s not quite as good at politics.

Specifically, the question of whether or not the UK has ever had a female Prime Minister.

Khan is currently a contestant on ITV’s reality show I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!. At the moment the campmates are taking part in a task that involves one of them acting as “Prime Minister” for the camp, and on Sunday night’s show the conversation turned political.

At which point, Amir Khan asked the following:

“has there ever been a woman prime minister” oh amir khan 😂😭😫
