Watch how Steven Spielberg framed ‘Ready Player One’ shots in VR

Despite plenty of skepticism over early trailers and the source material itself, Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One has been doing very well at the box office. En mi opinion, it made a lot of quality shifts from the book that made it a quality popcorn flick that wasn’t too nerdishly pretentious. A lot of people […]

Nostalgia eats itself in ‘Ready Player One’

First things first: I had a really good time watching Ready Player One. As promised, the movie feels like a chance for Steven Spielberg to return to his roots as a blockbuster filmmaker, and to take all the toys out of the box and smash them together. The film is based on Ernest Cline’s bestselling […]

Steven Spielberg is not a fan of Carl’s Jr.’s ‘SpielBurgers’

TwitterFacebook

Carl’s Jr. has a terrible-good idea: In honor of Ready Player One, rename all of the fast food restaurant’s sliders as “SpielBurgers.”

You know, because Ready Player One is directed by Steven Spielberg. So the tiny hamburger sliders are SpielBurgersGET IT???

Spielberg, the man himself, is not a fan of the idea, apparently. So much so that he recorded a video of himself smacking down Carl’s Jr. with a verbal cease-and-desist, then tweeted it out on the official Amblin Entertainment Twitter feed.

Steven Spielberg on why we’re so obsessed with the ’80s

TwitterFacebook

If anyone’s more obsessed than you with the ’80s, it’s Steven Spielberg.

The legendary director of new Easter egg-filled geek adventure Ready Player One reflected on why we’re so obsessed with nostalgia for the decade in a Q&A at the film’s Australian premiere in Sydney on Tuesday.

And he should know — Spielberg directed, wrote or produced Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins, E.T., Poltergeist, The Goonies and more in the 1980s.

Based on Ernest Cline’s 2011 science fiction novel, Ready Player One is set in a dystopian 2045 and follows the adventures of a teenager in an escapist VR game. Read more…

Steven Spielberg explained why ‘Ready Player One’ only references the original ‘Star Wars’

TwitterFacebook

As an unabashed homage to geek culture and 80s nostalgia smorgasboard, you probably assumed Ready Player One would be dripping with Star Wars references.

You’d be wrong.

While the marketing for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming movie showed zero restraint when it came to pop culture references, the director said he was actually careful about name-dropping Star Wars. Or rather, which Star Wars movies he included from the ever-expanding movie franchise.

“We didn’t want to use the main cultural icons from any of the Disney Star Wars films, because those are ongoing. That’s really part of our contemporary world right now. And even though it began in the ’80s, it is so much a part of our real life today in the 21st century. So we asked for some of the smaller items, and Disney gave us everything we asked for,” Spielberg said at a SXSW interview with Fandango. Read more…

Latest ‘Ready Player One’ trailer is here to remind you that it’s getting glowing reviews

TwitterFacebook

If the first reviews are to be believed, Ready Player One may be just the shot of epic, ’80s-tinged escapism you’re looking for.

That’s the big takeaway from the latest Ready Player One trailer, which wastes no time showing off the glowing reactions it got out of its SXSW premiere – in between the usual cutesy games of spot-the-reference, of course.

Ready Player One opens March 29.  Read more…

These icons of girlhood culture deserve adaptations like ‘Ready Player One’

TwitterFacebook

Let’s not beat around the bush: Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One is a circle jerk of male geek culture sustained over a grueling 400 pages.

On March 26, we’ll see the release of the mega-budget blockbuster adaptation of this fanboy-favorite, courtesy of cinema’s own champion of male geek culture, Steven Spielberg. There’s nothing wrong with that — and early reviews have even been more positive than expected!

But that doesn’t negate the criticisms against what Ready Player One represents — or rather, who fanboy culture tends to leave out.

‘Ready Player One’ review roundup: Dubbed ‘the geekiest movie ever made’

TwitterFacebook

Steven Spielberg’s virtual reality epic Ready Player One has landed, primed for geek-culture aficionados to smugly point out references all the way through.

Introduced by Spielberg himself at a secret screening at this year’s SXSW in Austin, Texas, the highly anticipated film earned a standing ovation at the credits (even after a few technical difficulties with sound).

Standing ovation for Spielberg after the #ReadyPlayerOne premiere. “That was probably the greatest anxiety attack I’ve ever had,” he said, alluding to the screening’s technical difficulties (truth is, it actually only made the crowd more excited) #SXSW pic.twitter.com/FxYMfk7LZf
