Reddit waits until it’s too late to ban violence-glorifying subreddits

TwitterFacebook

Another day, another internet giant belatedly deciding to apply its own policies in the face of a tragedy.

Following the tragic Christchurch terrorist attack in New Zealand that left 49 people dead and scores more injured, and the subsequent sharing online of a livestream from the killer, Reddit has banned two subreddits that it now says glorified or celebrated violence.

The first, r/watchpeopledie, was pretty much exactly what it sounds like — a place where people shared and commented on grisly videos of real deaths. The second, r/gore, was less specific in its death requirements but also contained violent video and images.  Read more…

After Christchurch, Reddit bans communities infamous for sharing graphic videos of death

In the aftermath of the tragic mosque massacre that claimed 49 lives in Christchurch, New Zealand, tech companies scrambled to purge their platforms of promotional materials that the shooter left behind. As most of the internet is now unfortunately aware, the event was broadcast live on Facebook, making it one of the most horrific incidents […]

The trans meme community on Reddit is about so much more than jokes

TwitterFacebook

There are dozens of subreddits for the trans community on Reddit, each designed to meet a certain psychological need.

There’s r/asktransgender, dedicated to people’s questions about the community, r/transgender, a subreddit for trans news, and r/transtimelines, where people can document their transitions. These are large and vibrant groups, with followers in the tens of thousands.

But for some folks who are just coming out as trans, memes and GIFs — not traditional, location-based support groups or advice-based subreddits — are where they first find community.

Take r/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns, Reddit’s oldest active subreddit for trans-centered shitposts, memes, and GIFs.  Traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns currently has over 84,300 “shitposters,” many of whom post meaningful content about transphobia or transitioning, then disguise it in shitpost robes or meme make-up.  Read more…

The ‘Thanks, I hate it’ meme has found its spiritual home

TwitterFacebook

Some memes are born to die. Others, like the “Thanks, I hate it” meme, can live eternally.

“Thanks, I hate it” — unlike many memes which fade as quickly as they appear — has real life force and patrons supporting its art. And thankfully there’s a whole new subreddit, r/TIHI (Thanks, I hate it), dedicated to keeping this meme alive.

At its core, “Thanks, I hate it” is a meme that celebrates what I like to call “Internet Gothic.” Similar to Southern Gothic, Internet Gothic is composed of the grotesque: hellish images, perverse Photoshops, photos suggestive of late capitalism, disturbing GIFs, shitposts, nihilist memes, and all the dumb shit we try and forget we saw on the internet. NBA Reddit is rightfully obsessed with Carly Rae Jepsen

TwitterFacebook

The NBA fans of Reddit are a lighthearted bunch. Extremely internet meme-dom peppers the typical talk of games and trades and stats. But the r/NBA subreddit recently took the discussion in a surprising — and delightful — direction, concerning pop star, queer icon, and internet queen Carly Rae Jepsen.

On January 30, Reddit user u/NAD_83 shared the news that Jepsen would be signing the Canadian National Anthem at the NBA All Star game, which takes place this weekend, on February 17. The news itself is not that surprising: Jepsen, who is Canadian, rose to fame after placing third on Canadian Idol in 2007. Read more…
