Presto raises $30M to bring its AI platform and tabletop ordering hardware to restaurant chains

The “restaurant of the future” may elicit thoughts of a chrome diner with robot servers and an otherwise hefty amount of Tokyo futurist kitsch, but the fact is that the forthcoming sit-down dining experience may just end up looking a lot like ordering from a takeout app. Presto is working with restaurants to update the […]

The limits of coworking

It feels like there’s a WeWork on every street nowadays. Take a walk through midtown Manhattan (please don’t actually) and it might even seem like there are more WeWorks than office buildings. Consider this an ongoing discussion about Urban Tech, its intersection with regulation, issues of public service, and other complexities that people have full […]

Food is actually being served on iPads and it’s my nightmare

TwitterFacebook

When the late Steve Jobs revealed a tablet called the iPad in 2010, I do not believe he intended for you tech obsessed fools to one day use it as a food plate.

And yet, in 2018, nearly ten years into the assumed-to-be-more-advanced future, here I am writing an article on why serving food directly on top of iPads is a complete an utter nightmare.

iPads are not plates. Do you understand?

Plates are defined as flat, often circular dishes, from which food is eaten or served. And iPads are essentially just big iPhones without calling capabilities. It should be abundantly clear that these two things are vastly different from one another and are meant to serve two very unrelated purposes. But there are apparently people out there who either don’t comprehend this fact, or worse — don’t care!  Read more…

Google Maps on iOS can now ‘match’ you with restaurants

TwitterFacebook

Figuring out where to eat has never been easier.

Google Maps on iOS has been updated Tuesday with a feature that shows you how well you “match” with a restaurant.

Once you’ve updated Google Maps on iOS to the latest version, the feature will automatically show as a “match” percentage on restaurants you find on Google Maps.

Google says the score is calculated “based on your unique preferences.” When the feature was first announced, in May, Google gave a bit more thorough explanation.

“We use machine learning to generate this number, based on a few factors: what we know about a business, the food and drink preferences you’ve selected in Google Maps, places you’ve been to, and whether you’ve rated a restaurant or added it to a list. Your matches change as your own tastes and preferences evolve over time—it’s like your own expert sidekick, helping you quickly assess your options and confidently make a decision,” the company said at the time.  Read more…
