Sudan, the last male northern white rhino, dies aged 45

Sudan, the last male northern white rhino on Earth, died on Monday aged 45.

Only one of three of its subspecies, Sudan came to represent the last hope, protected by round-the-clock armed security and given a 700-acre enclosure at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya.

Suffering from age-related health issues and a series of infections, Sudan’s condition worsened over Sunday and Monday. He was unable to stand up, clearly suffering, leading to a decision to euthanise him by his veterinary team.

It is with great sadness that Ol Pejeta Conservancy and the Dvůr Králové Zoo announce that Sudan, the world’s last male northern white rhino, age 45, died at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya on March 19th, 2018 (yesterday). #SudanForever #TheLoneBachelorGone #Only2Left pic.twitter.com/1ncvmjZTy1

You know how it is, you get home from a long day at work, climb in the shower, and just frolic.

The Toronto zoo shared footage of an 11-day-old rhino calf enjoying his first shower. Apparently he’d had the opportunity at 4-days-old, but didn’t know what to make of the weird wet stuff.

By the time the video was taken however he’d embraced the experience, unsurprising, as greater one-horned rhinos spend a lot of time around water in the wild. Read more…

This baby Black Rhino, prancing in the mud and rain, is too pure for this world

Some creatures are glass-half-fullers, like this little Southern Black Rhinoceros calf having a bit of a prance in the mud.

The yet-to-be-named calf was born on Oct. 31, at Taronga Western Plains Zoo outside of Dubbo, Australia.

Born to mother Bakhita and father Kwanzaa, the Halloween miracle is the second calf born this year as a result of the zoo’s Black Rhino breeding program.

Watch as little, let’s call him Spooky Boots for now, splashes about in the mud, then races around in the rain while mum takes cover. Read more…
