In a recently published, roughly 75-page report, British non-profit organization The Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts (RSA) outlined several scenarios for how the UK labor market will be impacted by frontier technologies such as automation, AI, AVs and more. Twitter says it can tell if you actually believe that bullsh*t you’re spreading
The internet is a confusing place. It’s not always clear if that weird Twitter account spamming your mentions is a well-intentioned idiot or a malicious actor – unless you work for the social media giant itself, that is.
Speaking to a group of security researchers and journalists at the annual RSA conference in San Francisco, Twitter vice president of trust and safety Del Harvey explained that the company is remarkably good at distinguishing between accounts intentionally spreading misinformation and those just plain ignorant of basic facts. Essentially, Harvey explained, Twitter has a pretty good idea whether or not you believe the bullshit you’re spreading. Read more…

Facebook’s rumored cryptocurrency project hasn’t even launched, and yet it’s already a punchline for the tens of thousands of security professionals, cryptographers, and researchers gathered at the annual RSA conference.
On March 5, in the San Francisco Moscone Center, the hotly anticipated Cryptographers’ Panel met to discuss the future of cryptography, the internet, and e-commerce. Of course cryptocurrency came up, with a mention of the so-called Facebook Coin drawing perhaps the biggest laugh of the talk.
Speaking of the problems inherent in putting even great research ideas into practice, panelist and cryptography expert Paul Kocher (known for, among other things, co-discovering Spectre) told attendees that the blockchain only makes things trickier. Read more…

Helen Mirren at RSA security conference: You’re heroes who ‘patrol a vast untamed wasteland’
The annual RSA cybersecurity conference is officially underway in San Francisco, and things have taken a turn for the weird.
In a packed convention hall in the city’s downtown Moscone Center, thousands of attendees gathered shortly after 8 a.m. on Tuesday for the opening keynote of an industry conference that draws security professionals from around the globe. And, because of course, Dame Helen Mirren was there to welcome them — and aggressively stroke their egos in the process.
“Many of you patrol a vast untamed wasteland on your own,” Dame Mirren cooed to what appeared to be a mostly male crowd. “You see the hope that you radiate has been felt worldwide by many souls you may never meet. Your sense of duty and goodness, like an eternal beacon, helps others find their way through the darkness.” Read more…

Responding to the talent shortage and increasing demand facing the cybersecurity industry, Udacity said that it is now developing a new nanodegree focused on security. Launched at the security industry’s RSA Conference, details about the new program (including potential partners) are still sketchy (there’s little available on the information page on the Udacity’s website about the program). Look, we get it. Cybersecurity is hard. But maybe, just maybe, a conference dedicated to computer security and encryption should know better than to leave attendee information exposed via its conference mobile app.
And yet.
