New ‘Space Jam’ to be produced by ‘Black Panther’ director and now we can’t wait

Everybody get up, the Space Jam sequel is suddenly stacked

With no casting beyond LeBron James and Bugs Bunny, the upcoming sports-comedy-cartoon followup will now be produced by Ryan Coogler. Terence Nance (Random Acts of Flyness) will direct.

The addition of Coogler has fans buzzing, since as a director he is known for more serious fare – even Black Panther, a superhero blockbuster, was layered with sociopolitical nuance. TwitterFacebook

If you left Avengers: Infinity War wanting way more of Wakanda and way less of everything else — hard same.

And we’re in luck, because USA Today released an exclusive clip of a deleted Black Panther scene. It’s a reminder of what makes the film stand out in the Marvel franchise, displaying the incredible depth of its characters while also speaking to real-world cultural issues and questions.

Most scintillatingly, it finally confirms what many suspected: Okoye and W’Kabi are married. And marriage is tough, man.

The scene takes place right after T’Challa loses the King’s Challenge to Erik Killmonger, and is thrown off a waterfall — presumably to his death. Read more…

In its opening weekend, Black Panther broke records. But in its second weekend, Marvel’s latest showed us it’s here to stay.

Black Panther‘s estimated three-day box office total in the United States for Friday-Saturday-Sunday comes out to $108 million. After 10 days in theaters, its domestic box office total (i.e. only here in the U.S.) is $400 million.

That climb ranks alongside Jurassic World as the second-fastest box office ascent in Hollywood history. Both of them fall behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which got to $400 million even faster. Excited for Black Panther? So are we. Which is why we’re rolling out obsessive coverage with Black Panther Week.

Long before super-team duo Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler teamed up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they did so in Oakland.

The two first joined forces in an indie film turned critical darling called Fruitvale Station, which documented the life of 22-year old Oscar Grant before he was shot and killed by BART police on New Year’s Day in 2009.
