Salma Hayek: Weinstein only responds to claims from women of color, as they’re ‘easiest to get discredited’

Salma Hayek has spoken out against Harvey Weinstein’s denials of sexual abuse against herself and actress Lupita Nyong’o, saying he hadn’t responded to any other actresses’ claims in the same way because they were both women of color.

Hayek spoke on the #MeToo movement and the fallout from accusations against disgraced producer Weinstein on Sunday as part of the Kering ‘Women in Motion’ talks at Cannes Film Festival, in a live-streamed interview at the Majestic Hotel.

Hayek publicly accused Weinstein of sexual harassment and abuse in December 2017, in a harrowing op-ed published in The New York Times. The Oscar-winning actress called Weinstein “her monster,” after his treatment of her on the set of 2002’s Frida — an accusation Weinstein denied. Read more…

In a night that seemed to sideline the Time’s Up and #MeToo movements for the first time since they exploded in Hollywood, the Oscar ceremony took a moment to acknowledge the rising tide of voices from women and people of color who the film industry has silenced for so long.

Salma Hayek, Ashley Judd, and Annabella Sciorra – all of whom accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault – took the stage to talk about the movement for equality in Hollywood.

In an emotional introduction, the women described the shift in the film industry over the past several months, before introducing a short film highlighting the year’s diverse films and creators. Filmmakers like Lee Daniels, Ava DuVernay, and Kumail Nanjiani spoke about representation and the future of cinemaMoonlight director Barry Jenkins recalled hearing women cry with the importance of Wonder Woman as they watched it in theaters. Salma Hayek presented the award for Best Actor at the BAFTAs on Sunday night — and she really wasn’t messing around.

Dressed in black in support of the Time’s Up movement like many of the actresses in attendance, Hayek kept her pre-award speech short — but she managed to get a couple of memorable lines in.

Here’s the first one:

“In this very important and historical year for women,” said Hayek, “I am here on this legendary stage to celebrate… men.”

Then, after the nominees had been announced, Hayek opened the golden envelope. And proceeded to announce the winner as “Frances McDormand”. Read more…

Salma Hayek speaks out on Harvey Weinstein: ‘He was my monster’

TwitterFacebook

Salma Hayek, the star of the Miramax-produced Frida, broke her silence about the alleged abuses she suffered at the hands of Harvey Weinstein, a man she’s calling “her monster” in a devastatingly vivid New York Times article

Her story makes clear how male abuses of power in Hollywood aren’t actually just about sex, but also about gatekeeping prestige filmmaking from women — especially those of color.

It wasn’t just that Weinstein allegedly warned her that “I will kill you, don’t think I can’t,” when Hayek denied his relentless sexual advances. She also claims he demanded she add a lesbian sex scene — a clear attempt to humiliate and degrade her, undermine her film and artistry — effectively sabotaging his own financial investment out of pure spite.
