Some self-driving car systems have trouble detecting darker skin, study says

Last year, Microsoft, IBM, and Amazon were called out for using facial recognition technology that was biased against people with dark skin. Well, it looks like self-driving cars could have the same problem.
An analysis from Georgia Tech researchers …

This 3D sensor will let almost any product ‘see’ the world down to the millimeter

Back in 2013, Occipital made waves with a 3D mapping sensor for the iPad.

Flash forward five years and Occipital is back with a new 3D sensor — this one a standalone product. The Structure Core is packed with all the tech it needs to map an environment with a high level of accuracy. Even better, it’s still very compact and can fit in the palm of your hand.

Don't just the Structure Core by its size.

The hardware onboard includes two main cameras: a 160-degree Field of View or an 85-degree Field of View RGB camera. The first allows for more detailed tracking, while the second enables color imagery. Which one you use for any particular task comes down to use case. Read more…

Volkswagen forms alliance to deal with flood of data from self-driving cars

TwitterFacebook

Self-driving cars eventually won’t need a human operator — but what the vehicles will need is a network powerful enough to handle the massive amount of data generated by their autonomous tech.

In order to ensure that network is as powerful as it needs to be, the Volkswagen Group of America — joined by four autonomous tech suppliers — formed the Networking for Autonomous Vehicles (NAV) Alliance on Tuesday.

The newly formed group of autonomous tech industry leaders aims to develop products for self-driving cars that support multi-gig ethernet connectivity, allowing those vehicles to better handle the data overload from all the sensors, cameras, RADAR, LIDAR, ultrasound, and other equipment that allow them to operate on the road without human drivers.   Read more…

IoT devices could be next customer data frontier

At the Adobe Summit this week in Las Vegas, the company introduced what could be the ultimate customer experience construct, a customer experience system of record that pulls in information, not just from Adobe tools, but wherever it lives. In many ways it marked a new period in the notion of customer experience management, putting […]

Blik brings warehouse logistics into the 21st century

Knowing what’s in your warehouse, where certain items are stored and where they are in the production process is highly valuable information for any manufacturer. But today, gathering this information is typically done with barcodes and scanners — and scanning these codes can take up a large part of a worker’s day.
Blik, which is presenting in the TechCrunch Disrupt Berlin… Read More
