TripAdvisor is still promoting hotels after learning of sexual assault allegations, report finds

TwitterFacebook

TripAdvisor is promoting hotels and other businesses that are at the centre of rape and sexual assault allegations, even after users notify them of alleged attacks by staff members, a Guardian report finds.

The travel site — which is the largest in the world and has 490 million visitors monthly — is facing criticism over poor handling of complaints from women who say they have been raped or assaulted by staff members at businesses promoted on TripAdvisor.

An anonymous woman told The Guardian that when she reported being raped by a tour guide operating out of a hotel to TripAdvisor – after first reporting the incident to police and the hotel in question – TripAdvisor told her to leave a review on the hotel’s page detailing the assault.  Read more…

Government website outages prevent comments on sexual assault Title IX rule changes

TwitterFacebook

The fight to reform sexual assault policies on campus is facing a maddeningly bureaucratic hurdle.

On the final day during which citizens could share comments with the Department of Education about its proposed changes to Title IX protections for sexual assault victims, the government website went down.

Starting at 10 am ET, comment submissions sections on regulations.gov and federalregister.gov were inoperable for “a few hours” Wednesday morning, and have been “finicky” since, according to organizers.

🚨Today’s the last day to submit comments on Betsy DeVos’ dangerous proposed Title IX changes, but the @UsEdGov site is 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧. This is unacceptable — @KLMarcusOCR, @BenjaminEW, @MHackman, this needs to be fixed IMMEDIATELY. #HandsOffIX pic.twitter.com/oVYmcXrn2W

TwitterFacebook

Hollywood has been slow to respond to the new sexual assault allegations against director Bryan Singer, published in a bombshell Atlantic exposé yesterday, Jan. 23.

But the LGBTQ media alliance group GLAAD is taking matters into its own hands.

Bohemian Rhapsody, directed by Singer, was officially pulled from the list of nominees for outstanding film (wide release) at the GLAAD Media Awards, Variety reports.

“This week’s story in The Atlantic documenting unspeakable harms endured by young men and teenage boys brought to light a reality that cannot be ignored or even tacitly rewarded,” GLAAD wrote in a statement. Read more…

Time’s Up UK fund pays out £1M to combat sexual assault and harassment

TwitterFacebook

When the Justice and Equality Fund was set up earlier this year, it was kicked off with a £1million ($1,3 million) donation from Emma Watson and signed off on by more than 200 British women in the entertainment industry.

The foundation — the UK counterpart of the Time’s Up Legal Defence Fund in the U.S. — is working to end systemic harassment and abuse. Now the organisation has made its first major donation to British women’s organisations supporting survivors of sexual abuse and harassment.

The fund just awarded over £1M in grants to 7 women’s organisations in the UK. The biggest donations — around £200,000 ($264,000) — were made to two separate legal support services for women in the UK and a rape crisis service in Northern Ireland. The country has been without rape crisis support services in 12 years due to funding cuts. Read more…

What sexual assault survivors and activists are doing now after Kavanaugh confirmation

TwitterFacebook

It was almost 5:30 p.m. ET on Friday. Sen. Susan Collins, once a swing vote, had just announced her plan to confirm Kavanaugh, all but guaranteeing his lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court.

Jess Morales Rockett, political director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) — who you might recognize from a video where she confronted Sen. Ted Cruz with her own sexual assault story — was on the ground, surrounded by other exhausted, restless protesters.

“I’m literally sitting on the steps of the Capitol Building as I talk to you,” she said on the phone, voice cracking under the weight of a burden too many survivors were made to shoulder throughout the hearing. But there was something else, too.  Read more…
