U.S. women’s soccer team marks International Women’s Day by suing for equal treatment

TwitterFacebook

The U.S. women’s soccer team has a reputation for never giving up. If they happen to concede a goal or two, you can expect them to maximize every chance until they’ve closed the gap or taken the lead.

On International Women’s Day, they showed that fighting mentality off the field when the team’s 28 players sued the U.S. Soccer Federation for “years of ongoing institutionalized gender discrimination,” according to a press release.

The suit is the latest phase in a battle for equality that launched in 2016 when the team’s highest-profile players filed a wage discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The players, including Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, and Carli Lloyd, argued that despite working as hard as — and even outperforming — the U.S. soccer men’s team, they received less compensation.  Read more…

Mario Balotelli celebrates a goal by immediately posting a video to Instagram

TwitterFacebook

Soccer star Mario Balotelli busted out an impressive way to celebrate his latest goal: by posting a celebratory video to Instagram.

The Marseille star netted a fantastically acrobatic goal in the twelfth minute of his team’s match against Saint-Etienne on Sunday, after which he was handed his phone by a team cameraman posted behind the field’s end line. As Balotelli’s teammates swarmed for a celebration, Balotelli snapped a quick video.

And it didn’t take long to figure out what he was up to as the video quickly appeared on his Instagram feed.

This 19-second clip from a chaotic football match has gone deservedly viral

TwitterFacebook

A football match doesn’t need to be played in the Premier League, or in a global tournament, to be exciting.

The clip below provides wonderful proof of this.

On Saturday, Wingate & Finchley FC took on Dulwich Hamlet FC in the UK’s FA Trophy competition. The following 19-second snippet from the game has been shared on Twitter thousands of times.

Here’s the moment you’ve been (secretly) waiting for, the goal line scramble vs @DulwichHamletFC – as mentioned on @btsportscore by @JeffBrazier

Ada Hegerberg becomes first woman to win the Ballon D’Or, gets asked if she can twerk

TwitterFacebook

When Norwegian footballer Ada Hegerberg became the first woman to win the Ballon D’Or, she likely wasn’t expecting to get asked about her dancing prowess.

Not only are we still living in an age where women are having “firsts,” we’re also still living in an era where men think it’s cool to ask women if they know how to twerk just as they’re accepting a historic award.

After Hegerberg delivered a speech with an empowering message to young girls, French DJ Martin Solveig decided it’d be a great idea to ask her — after she’d literally just been named the best female footballer in the world — est-ce que tu sais twerker?“, which means: “Do you know how to twerk?” Read more…

Ross Kemp filming himself while watching soccer is more entertaining than the actual game

When Ross Kemp isn’t busy confronting scary people in one of his documentaries, he likes to unwind in front of a soccer match.
Actually, “unwind” might be the wrong way of of putting it.

Soccer player scores brilliantly odd goal, follows it up with an even better tweet

TwitterFacebook

When it comes to soccer, getting the ball into the back of the net is the main thing. It doesn’t really matter how it happens.

Here to demonstrate that fact is Lauren Hemp, who took part in the England v Mexico under 20 World Cup group game on Sunday — and scored what can only be described as a fairly memorable goal.

That is one undeniably strange goal, it’s true.

Soon, Creech’s tweet had prompted a bunch of similarly odd examples.

19-year-old World Cup winner Kylian Mbappé is making a lot of fans feel old

TwitterFacebook

Imagine being 19 and also a World Cup winner. I personally cannot!

France’s Kylian Mbappé, 19, has become the youngest player in six decades to score during a World Cup final, according to ESPN. (In 1958, Pele scored two goals against Sweden at the age of 17.)

That’s right, folks. Mbappé is 19 years old, which means he was born in 1998. And he’s inspiring both awe and mild existential crises in many World Cup viewers.

As he should. Teens are well on their way to ruling the world. Read more…

These photos of England’s manager hugging his wife post-World Cup loss will hit you right in the heart

TwitterFacebook

There’s nothing like a hug to comfort you after your team loses a World Cup match.

On Wednesday, after England lost the World Cup semi-final game to Croatia, fans, players, and team manager Gareth Southgate were completely heartbroken.

While we didn’t see Southgate plop down on the field to mourn the loss like some of his players did, photographers did capture an extremely touching post-game moment he shared with his wife Alison in the stands.

The two were seen reuniting after the game, kissing and embracing among empty seats, later joined by family members. The photographs of the emotional moment are just so damn pure — like something straight out of Friday Night Lights. Read more…
