Amid a global refugee crisis that’s seen more than 22.5 million people flee countries like Syria and South Sudan because of civil war and famine, southern Bangladesh is poised to build the largest refugee camp in the world.

In recent months, more than 582,000 Rohingya refugees — a Muslim ethnic minority in Myanmar often described as “the most persecuted minority in the world” — have fled oppression and extreme violence in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine state. The resulting humanitarian crisis has worsened even more over the past few weeks.

The Rock surprised three Make-A-Wish children with Xbox One X consoles and damn do we love him

TwitterFacebook

Dwayne Johnson, a.k.a. The Rock a.k.a. Dwanta Claus, took some time out of his day Tuesday to do what The People’s Champ does best: make people happy.

Johnson surprised three Make-A-Wish children with a memorable day on Tuesday, hanging out with them on the set of his upcoming movie and giving them all custom, Rock-inspired Xbox One X consoles, Xbox shared today.

The day before, Johnson took to Instagram to spread the news, dubbing himself Dwanta Claus and donning his own custom Santa hat.

After months of #DwantaClaus🎅🏾 planning, our big MAKE A WISH day has finally come. Tomorrow, Tues, Oct 31st, our #SkyscraperMovie set will welcome three VERY special kids and their families. As always, whenever special kids visit, I make sure my movie sets are like Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. All love, all fun and all the sweets you can eat for FREE! All my teams are flying in to help make this special – @sevenbucksprod @sevenbucksds @garciacompanies and our awesome partners @makeawishamerica @makeawishintl as well as, @microsoft and @Xbox. And course, #DwantaClaus🎅🏾 will be waiting with open arms and a song to sing. But no tequila because everyone’s underage. 😂 So excited for tomorrow. Gonna be an amazing day that we’ve officially titled LIGHTS, CAMERA, LOVE.. IN ACTION. #MakeAWish #Emily #Maria #Murat #Dwanta🎅🏾 Read more…

Editor’s note: Gavin Newsom is the lieutenant governor of California.

My day of reckoning arrived during Mr. Morris’s class in middle school. I strategically sat in the last desk in the last row of every one of my classes, my eyes cast down, listening as the clock ticked one notch closer to the time the bell would ring and dispel my anxiety.

But that day, the gig was up. Mr. Morris asked me to read aloud, and I stood at my desk shaking as I gripped the book in my sweaty hands and painfully stumbled through the paragraph, tripping over the words. My cheeks burned red with embarrassment. I slumped back into my chair, my classmates’ taunting laughter still ringing in my ears. Read more…

11 influential Hispanic activists you need to know

TwitterFacebook

Whether it’s through grassroots organizing or artistic self-celebration, Hispanic activists have been working for decades to create better lives for those who share their heritage and culture.

Activists who originate from Spanish-speaking countries have a vast history of fierce activism for their communities, pushing social progress and creating tangible change. But we rarely hear of their contributions, leaving their impact largely uncelebrated — even if it’s widely felt.

During Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, it’s essential to take time to recognize the pioneers of progress for Hispanic communities.  Read more…
