Seth Meyers doesn’t think much of Trump’s criticism of Spike Lee’s Oscars speech

There was no direct mention of Trump at the Oscars, except for Spike Lee’s hint at choosing “love versus hate” at the 2020 presidential elections.
That still prompted a response from the president, and subsequently from Seth Meyers during L…

Uh oh: Newspaper cover confuses Spike Lee for Stan Lee

TwitterFacebook

We’ve all made a typo in our time.

So has New Zealand’s Gisborne Herald, who made an almighty error on the front page of its Tuesday newspaper when it commemorated the late comic book legend Stan Lee.

While the Herald had published a photo of the Marvel great, who died at 95, the caption pointed to director Spike Lee, who is very much alive.

RIP … *checks notes*

Why Spike Lee cast a Finnish actor as the most fanatical white supremacist in ‘BlacKkKlansman’

TwitterFacebook

When Jasper Pääkkönen walked out of the audition room after reading for the main white supremacist role in BlacKkKlansman, Spike Lee was absolutely convinced the actor was born and bred in the States – which is fittingly symbolic for a film based entirely on false perceptions, impersonations, and doppelgängery of almost Shakespearean proportions.

“At some point Spike looked at my last name, which has a lot of umlauts, a lot of dots,” Pääkkönen told Mashable during an hour-long phone interview as he was driving through the Finnish countryside towards the capital.

“Spike stops me in the middle of the scene and goes, ‘Hold on, hold on, hold on! Where are you from?’ And I go, ‘um, Helsinki, Finland.’  Read more…

‘She’s Gotta Have It’ is a fierce, unapologetic love letter to young people of color

TwitterFacebook

In the current climate, for both media and politics, we’re oversaturated. We’re at peak TV, peak reboots, peak outrage, and peak fatigue towards having to stay active, alert, and woke.

Under the circumstances, it’s tough work for a television show to not feel like excess; why here, and why now? Spike Lee may not have planned for his updated She’s Gotta Have It – a black and white movie from the ’80s that’s now a vivacious and colorful Netflix show – to release into that landscape, but the series thrives on adversity. Born into a perfect storm of sociopolitical context, She’s Gotta Have It is more than its circumstances or the sum of its parts; it’s just good. Read more…
