Tesla will end its buyer referral program for ‘adding too much cost’

At the end of the month, Tesla will end a long-running referral program that offered incentives for existing Tesla owners to help drive sales. In its recent iterations, the referral system gifted new buyers who found their way to a Tesla through a friend with six months of free charging at Supercharger stations. Most recently, […]

This wireless charger is made specially for the Tesla Model 3

TwitterFacebook

Tesla certainly has big ambitions for its sleek all-electric vehicles, though these plans don’t (yet) include wireless chargers.

But, come April, a group of engineers say they will launch a wireless charging pad that fits seamlessly into the Tesla Model 3, the electric vehicle company’s first mass-market offering — and the vehicle the company’s future is balanced upon.

Tesla Wireless Pad is marketing their $99 product as something Tesla’s chief designer, Franz von Holzhausen, “forgot” to include below the Model 3’s touch screen.    Read more…

Elon Musk will get nothing if Tesla fails, almost everything if it succeeds

TwitterFacebook

Billionaire Elon Musk‘s future compensation from Tesla is now completely dependent upon the electric car company’s future success.

Under a new 10-year plan announced on Tuesday, the Tesla CEO will henceforth receive $0 in salary. Instead, Musk will be rewarded with Tesla stock — but only if 12 specific “operational milestones” are met.

“Elon will receive no guaranteed compensation of any kind – no salary, no cash bonuses, and no equity that vests simply by the passage of time,” Tesla’s statement reads.  Read more…

Automotive expert Bob Lutz suggests buying a Tesla before it goes out of business

TwitterFacebook

Tesla might sell more all-electric vehicles than any other car manufacturer in the U.S., but automotive industry veteran Bob Lutz warns the company could soon go broke.

The 85-year old Lutz’s candid thoughts were reported last week by The Los Angeles Times as the former Vice Chairman of General Motors spoke to a group of vintage car collectors.

In Lutz’s view, Tesla’s vehicles — like its high-speed Model S sedan — could soon become valuable collector’s items when Tesla’s business model fails. Lutz apparently believes Tesla “hasn’t figured out the revenues have to be greater than costs … when you are perennially running out of cash you are just not running a good automobile company.” Read more…

Tesla made this feature to quell concerns about becoming stranded in the middle of nowhere

TwitterFacebook

Tesla’s latest feature doesn’t even require owning one of its vehicles.

The electric car company today launched an online trip planning tool that shows people where they can drive around the U.S. in a Tesla.

Although anyone is free to explore the tool, it’s designed for prospective Tesla customers — perhaps those concerned about running out of battery life while stranded on a lonely, windswept New Mexican highway during monsoon season. Tesla owners already have this specialized navigation tool in their cars, but now, it’s being made available to everyone on the website.

We need to lay off the overzealous hero-worship of Elon Musk

TwitterFacebook

After a year of making headlines for groundbreaking achievements and troubling controversies, it’s become nearly impossible to avoid the cult of personality surrounding Elon Musk

The multi-hyphenate CEO billionaire is undeniably one of the most visible figures in the modern world. He leads multiple companies that could potentially shape society’s future; he’s a prime example of capitalism’s potential after building his own fortune by betting on his hard work and genius; and he maintains a (seemingly) open public persona, interacting with fans and shareholders alike on Twitter in a cool, relatable voice fluent in the eccentric vocabulary of the internet.  Read more…

The 5 biggest questions we still have about the Tesla Semi

TwitterFacebook

Tesla finally unveiled its heavy-duty, all-electric Semi truck, and we’re impressed.

The big rig is the sum of all of the automaker’s work in one massive package, featuring design cues from its other vehicles and even borrowing their parts, like the Model 3 motors that power each of its “super single” wheels. Musk claims the Semi will also offer truckers BAMF acceleration and performance specs, up to 500 miles of range per charge, and a cheaper cost to operate than standard diesel trucks.

The Semi certainly looks the part of the next big thing for the trucking industry — but there’s still so much about it that we don’t know. Elon Musk only showed off certain aspects of the truck during his presentation, leaving some very important features to be shared at a later date, when Tesla is ready to start churning out the rigs for clients.  Read more…
