Out with the old and in with the new: a new Prince Philip just rolled into the royal court, and he’s a very familiar face to Outlander fans.
Tobias Menzies, the talented actor in the Starz show behind both Jack and Frank Randall, joins the Netflix cast of The Crown for its upcoming Season 3. Those familiar with Outlander know that Menzies can really ride the line between a perfect British gentleman, and an abhorrently vindictive human being — which is perfect for Philip’s characterization in this fictionalization of the royal family.

Following the recent reveal that Matt Smith out-earned Claire Foy on The Crown – even though Foy was the true lead of the series – fans are calling on Smith to help even the score.
A Care2 petition is asking Smith and Netflix to donate the difference in Smith and Foy’s paychecks to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund, as a way to “make up for this sexist pay gap.” At time of writing, the campaign has over 24,000 signatures.
Smith and Netflix did not respond to Mashable’s requests for comment.
News of the pay disparity emerged last week, when producers admitted during a panel that Smith was paid more in large part due to his Doctor Who fame. Read more…

Want to be mad? Claire Foy made less than Matt Smith on ‘The Crown’
Two producers on Netflix’s The Crown revealed Tuesday that Matt Smith made more than Claire Foy for the first two seasons of the show.
“Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen,” said Left Bank creative director Suzanne Mackie, per Variety.
That’s the correct response, but Foy is no longer the Queen wearing the titular crown, so it’s not like it does her much good.
It sort of makes sense Smith was offered more initially – producers acknowledged he was a known commodity from Doctor Who – but Foy was the evident breakout star, earning multiple nominations, and wins at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards. So what’s their excuse for Season 2? Read more…

The new Prince Philip has arrived.
Paul Bettany is “being lined up” to play the famously gaffe-prone royal in Netflix’s The Crown, Variety reported on Saturday.
He would replace Matt Smith, who portrayed a younger version of Philip in the show’s first two seasons.
Bettany would join Olivia Colman and Helena Bonham Carter — set to play Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Margaret, respectively — in the cast. At least a portion of Season 3 is set in the 1970s, and will include, among other things, the breakup of Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon. (It doesn’t count as a spoiler if it already happened IRL, right?) Read more…
