An intense ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 3 trailer is here and the fight is on

TwitterFacebook

Hulu has dropped the first trailer for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3, and it’s not much of a spoiler that things are getting intense. The new spot leaves us with more questions than answers – and, unfortunately, a long wait for the show’s return.

Taking inspiration from Ronald Reagan’s “Morning in America” campaign, the Super Bowl spot is downright chilling.

But of course, what else would you expect from Gilead?

Season 3 does not yet have a release date.  Read more…

TwitterFacebook

A grab bag of 2018 TV spoilers lies ahead. You have been warned.

We’re not mad. Just disappointed.

The past twelve months of TV gave us killer comedy specials, incredible new series, and a whole lot of (positive) NOPE. Unfortunately, in the words of renowned television critic Isaac Newton, what goes up must come down. Hard.

From Pete Davidson mocking a veteran on SNL to the hellscape that was the Season 2 finale of 13 Reasons Why, here are 9 of the most irresponsible TV moments of 2018—in ascending order of do better-ness

Note: We’re keeping this list in the entertainment realm — hard news obviously had its own host of issues this year. Read more…

We made a bracket to figure out the biggest TV villain

TwitterFacebook

It’s Villain Week here at Mashable. In honor of the release of Venom, we’re celebrating all our favorite evildoers from film and TV all week long. Spooky, scary!

Everyone loves a good villain. We here at Mashable have spent hours poring over the notorious accomplishments of Hollywood’s biggest baddies; we ranked enemies of the Avengers, we rocked out with Disney cartoons, and now we’re turning our attention to the small screen to find the most powerful (fictional) villain on TV.

A couple parameters: Because there is #toomuchTV, we kept our list to shows still airing new episodes (even the shocking antagonist of Sharp Objects didn’t qualify). Apart from that, we stayed flexible; The Kid from Castle Rock may or may not be the devil, but ask a true This Is Us fan about Miguel and they might say the same!  Read more…

Inside the cult of Ann Dowd: ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ actress offers a masterclass in the art of antagonists

TwitterFacebook

Some spoilers for Compliance, True Detective: Season 1, The Leftovers, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Hereditary lie ahead.

Hollywood’s go-to malicious missionary, Ann Dowd, knows a thing or two about indoctrinating audiences. With over 30 years of stage, film, and television experience, Dowd has assumed the roles of politicians, doctors, mothers, FBI agents, and—as of late—lots and lots of cult members.

Gaining prominence in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, the notorious character actress has earned a reputation, as well as an Emmy, for getting into the minds of antagonistic zealots and delivering disturbingly convincing performances. Read more…

Joseph Fiennes: This ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ scene would’ve gone too far

TwitterFacebook

The Handmaid’s Tale doesn’t shy away from physical or sexual violence, but one Season 2 scene was too much for actor Joseph Fiennes.

Fiennes spoke to Entertainment Weekly about a cut scene in which his character, Commander Fred Waterford, rapes his wife right after a hostile interaction in Canada.

“In episode 9, we had a moment where Fred was going to rape — after meeting Luke — rape Serena in a hotel room straight after, and it just didn’t track for me,” Fiennes said. “I had to go out on a limb and refuse to do it because I felt that even though Fred is who he is, he’s human.”  Read more…

Who is June speaking to in the voiceover for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’?

TwitterFacebook

This article contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 2, Episode 11, and speculation about the plot for future seasons.

More than any other episode before it, “Holly” made clear that June’s voiceovers in The Handmaid’s Tale are more than just a powerful storytelling device.

June is telling her story to someone, somewhere, at some time in the future. And that raises a whole mess of questions we might not even have thought to ask before.

Who is the “you” June is telling her story to? How is she even telling her story at all, when she lives in a society that forbids her from either speaking or writing? What does it mean for her survival — and Gilead’s? And what does this tell us about the show’s endgame? Read more…
