Tidal’s high-fidelity ‘Masters’ audio mode lands on iOS apps

Tidal may be a distant competitor to Apple Music and Spotify but much like Neil Young’s PonoMusic, Tidal is keeping its high-fidelity music service going far past its expected expiration date. Tidal’s most premium-est audio vision, Tidal Masters, gives your tunes a studio-quality kick (typically 96 kHz / 24 bit), a substantial bump beyond what […]

Three major music labels make $19 million a day from streaming while artists count their pocket change

TwitterFacebook

Streaming services are now paying out big money to the music industry’s gatekeepers.

According to a new report by industry news outlet Music Business Worldwide, the three major music labels made $6.93 billion combined from streaming in 2018. The publication poured through recent investor filings from Universal Music Group’s parent company Vivendi, Sony, and Warner and found that the companies are totaling $19 million in daily streaming revenue.

Broken down even further, the trio of labels generate nearly $800,000 per hour just from music streaming services.

As Rolling Stone points out, when looking at the combined revenue for the three labels across all formats and commercial endeavors — $13.14 billion — streaming revenue accounts for more than half of that. That’s more than a 10 percent jump when compared to how much streaming revenue accounted for in 2017. Read more…

Holy sh*t, Beyoncé and Jay Z just dropped a surprise album

TwitterFacebook

Sad about missing Beyoncé and Jay Z’s “On the Run II” tour? Well, now you don’t have to be.

Not exactly, anyway. The wife-and-husband power duo surprise released a new album — exclusively for Tidal, of course — on Saturday afternoon. The long-rumored joint album bears the title “Everything Is Love.”

To whet the appetites of all those non-Tidal subscribers out there, Bey shared a video snippet from one of the album’s nine tracks on Instagram. In the video, which is for a track called “APES**T,” she and Jay wander around the Louvre in a variety of different outfits while dancers do their thing. Read more…

Blue Ivy makes her acting debut in the music video for Jay-Z’s ‘Family Feud’

TwitterFacebook

Happy belated holidays from Jay-Z (and Beyoncé) — and about a million more of your favorite industry heavyweights.

“Family Feud” featuring Beyonce off of Jay’s latest studio album 4:44 gets a stunning visual treatment, directed by Ava DuVernay and starring everyone from Mindy Kaling to Janet Mock to Jessica Chastain to Thandie Newton to Moonlight‘s Trevante Rhodes to Michael B. Jordan to Blue Ivy herself and oh my goodness, I’m running out of breath.

Safe to say everyone with Tidal (honestly, this might be worth the plunge if you haven’t made it already) who’s seen the eight minute short film/music video had a meltdown on Twitter.  Read more…

Jay Z and Bey tease ‘Family Feud’ video, hoping their love makes you buy TIDAL

TwitterFacebook

Even three years after launching, Jay-Z and Beyonce’s family life still appears to be TIDAL’s greatest asset.

A 30-second music video clip for 4:44’s “Family Feud” showcases the couple’s latest attempt to use their marital troubles — well-documented in Beyonce’s TIDAL-exclusive visual album Lemonade — to get you to buy a subscription to their “premium” music streaming service.

And, tbh, it’s kinda working.

There’s no doubt that Bey and Jay look fierce as hell in the brief trailer for the track from his Grammy-nominated album, detailing how “nobody wins when the family feuds.” In the preview, Jay Z can be seen fooling around with some lady who certainly is not Beyonce. In contrast, he’s also seen walking down the aisle of an extravagant church with his daughter, Blue Ivy, and standing in judgement of his wife, clad in a dramatic black gown. Read more…
