Inside Atari’s rise and fall

By the first few months of 1982, it had become more common to see electronics stores, toy stores, and discount variety stops selling 2600 games. This was before Electronics Boutique, Software Etc., and later, GameStop. Mostly you bought games at stores that sold other electronic products, like Sears or Consumer Distributors. Toys ’R’ Us was a big seller of 2600 games. To buy one, you had to get a piece of paper from the Atari aisle, bring it to the cashier, pay for it, and then wait at a pickup window behind the cash register lanes.

‘Shadow of the Tomb Raider’ preview: Why do we need to torture Lara Croft?

The ‘Tomb Raider’ movie surpasses gaming’s Lara Croft, but is that enough?

TwitterFacebook

Lara Croft is a character who inherently comes with decades of baggage — and I don’t just mean the absurd chest size that’s tended to define her iconography.

The latest iterations of Lara in the 2013 video game reboot and corresponding 2018 movie reboot (if you’re keeping score, that’s a reboot within a reboot — and please, god, make it stop) have attempted to cast her in a more feminist or relatable light. Some of those attempts feel sincere. Overall, none of them amount to more than #feminism as #woke #branding.

Truth be told, the Alicia Vikander-starring Tomb Raider is still probably one of the best video game adaptations Hollywood has ever managed to produce. True, that’s a pretty low bar to clear, when you’re out-classing, like, the Resident Evil movies and 1995’s Mortal Kombat. But it is a mostly unobjectionable, entertaining way to spend two hours — that presents no modicum of originality or risk. Read more…

Alicia Vikander reacts to Time’s Up and Frances McDormand’s Oscars acceptance speech

Alicia Vikander has praised Frances McDormand’s Oscar acceptance speech and described the ways in which Time’s Up has impacted her own career.

Speaking to Mashable live on Facebook on Monday, Vikander — who is starring in the upcoming adaptation of Tomb Raider — talked about the effect the campaign is having on people in the industry.

“I was there with Time’s Up presenting at the Golden Globes and I found myself, in the weeks leading up to that, in more discussions and more phonecalls with actresses, writers, directors — females that I have, sadly, just kind of been pushed far away from in the industry,” said Vikander. Alicia Vikander shows off her action-hero chops in the new ‘Tomb Raider’ trailer

TwitterFacebook

Tomb Raider is hoping the third time’s the charm.

Though the popular video game series has been adapted for film twice before, with Angelina Jolie in the lead role of Lara Croft, neither really caught fire.

So Hollywood is trying again, this time with Alicia Vikander.

If you mainly know the Swedish actress from her prestige-drama roles and plum period pieces, this represents quite the change of pace – she’s a bonafide action star in this one, racing and swinging and shooting her way through the jungle.

Walton Goggins, Dominic West, and Daniel Wu also starTomb Raider hits theaters March 16. Read more…
