‘Game of Thrones’ to turn filming locations into decked-out tourist attractions

If you’ve been to Northern Ireland to see where Game of Thrones films – well, you’re going again. HBO announced Monday that Thrones‘ Northern Irish filming locations will be reopened as fully outfitted tourist attractions as the show concludes in 2019.

While diehard Thrones fans have visited the show’s iconic locations in like Belfast and Dubrovnik, Game of Thrones Legacy will take viewers behind the scenes with costumes, props, weapons, set dressing, concept art, and more.

 “We look forward to opening the gates and sharing the excitement of stepping inside these amazing sets with Game of Thrones fans from around the world,” said Jeff Peters, Vice President, Licensing and Retail, HBO. “The opportunity to celebrate Northern Ireland’s pivotal role in the life and legacy of the show and share its culture, beauty and warmth is also a huge inspiration behind these Legacy projects.”  Read more…

Tourism is unquestionably beneficial to both economies and anyone seeking to visit new lands. 

However, your international vacation has a serious dark side.

A new study published this week in the journal Nature Climate Change suggests that vacationing actually releases far more climate change-inducing greenhouse gases into Earth’s atmosphere than previously expected. 

When taking into account not only the direct emissions from jet and automobile engines, but also the millions of supply chains needed to feed and support vacationers, researchers found that global tourism today generates 8 percent of the carbon we send into Earth’s atmosphere each year.  Read more…

New Zealand is continually omitted from maps of the world. Seriously, there’s an entire Reddit thread highlighting examples of the country being completely wiped from global existence. 

Also known as Aotearoa or “the land of the long white cloud,” New Zealand is missing from maps in Getty stock images, German museums, Ikea wall stickers, tattoos, iPhone cases — even the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum’s globe left it out.

And New Zealand’s just about done with it.

The country’s tourism board has launched a fun new ad campaign dubbed #getNZonthemap, with a commercial starring Kiwi Flight of the Conchords star Rhys Darby and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Tourists end up with $1300 restaurant bill in Venice, prompting anger from mayor

Avoiding being ripped off is an inevitable part of travelling, but sometimes you get unlucky.

Four Japanese visitors were presented with a €1,143 ($1,350) bill at a Venice restaurant, prompting anger from the city’s mayor, according to a report by ANSA.

The group of students dined at the restaurant located near the tourist hotspot St Mark’s Square, and ordered four steaks, a fried fish platter and mineral water. 

Three other women, who were part of the group, suspected they were being scammed and decided to leave the restaurant, but still ended up paying €350 ($535) for three pasta dishes. Read more…
