Out of traffic, into a ditch: Why Waze on snowy mountain roads could be a bad idea

TwitterFacebook

Rachael got out of her car, crying as she walked through a foot and a half of snow, looking for a paved road that could take her out of the mountains.

Instead, she found herself staring into the face of a horse wearing a blanket.

How did Rachael — in a car with four-wheel drive in an extremely popular tourist destination — find herself stuck on an unpaved road in the snow? Apple Maps.

Recently, transportation officials and highway patrolmen who manage snowy, mountain roads have a new problem to manage, beyond the usual slick roads: the tendency of real-time navigation apps like Google Maps, Waze, and Apple Maps to send drivers onto potentially unsafe roads in an effort to find shortcuts or avoid traffic. It got so bad California Highway Patrol was forced to put up a sign.  Read more…

Audi’s new V2I feature helps drivers hit every green light

Audi has added a new feature to the vehicle-to-infrastructure technology embedded in its newer models that’s designed to help drivers catch every green light. The tech, called GLOSA or Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory, is part of the automaker’s built-in traffic light-reading technology. And Audi says it’s the first automaker to include this GLOSA feature in its […]

Netflix consumes 15 percent of the world’s internet traffic, report says

TwitterFacebook

Video is taking over the internet, but it’s never been more obvious than when you look at who’s hogging the world’s internet bandwidth.

Netflix alone consumes a staggering 15 percent of global internet traffic, according to the new Global Internet Phenomena Report by bandwidth management company Sandvine.

Movie and TV show fans are lapping up so much video content that the category as a whole makes up nearly 58 percent of downstream traffic across the entire internet. The report brings us some truly shocking numbers when it comes to the state of web traffic, too. But, at 15 percent all on it’s own, no single service takes up more bandwidth than Netflix. A whole bunch of cows are loose on a Georgia highway

TwitterFacebook

We typically expect fender benders, construction, and terrible drivers to cause traffic — but never do we imagine that our morning commutes will be disrupted by loose livestock.

Welp, naturally chaos ensued after a tractor-trailer transporting cattle overturned on Monday morning, releasing more than 70 cows onto a highway in Georgia.

The trailer containing the cows rolled over on a ramp heading onto the I-285 at the Cobb Cloverleaf, the Georgia Department of Transportation told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Georgia DOT has captured a few of the cows that escaped from the tractor, but are still looking for more with the help of local authorities. Read more…

Tapping into the power grid could predict the morning traffic

Why is there traffic? This eternal question haunts civic planners, fluid dynamics professors, and car manufacturers alike. But just counting the cars on the road won’t give you a sufficient answer: you need to look at the data behind the data. In this case, CMU researchers show that electricity usage may be key to understanding movement around the city.

Massive snake crossing the street brings traffic to a standstill

TwitterFacebook

You can complain about traffic all you want, but have you ever had your entire commute derailed by a massive anaconda?

The snake — which was approximately 11.5 feet long — slithered out of the forest and started crossing the street in Manaus, Brazil. Taking its sweet time getting to the other side, the huge anaconda was longer than the width of a car lane.

The video ends before the jaywalker (jay-slitherer?) gets to the other side, so we never get to know why the anaconda crossed the road.  Read more…
